Ringing in 2023 {Traditional New Year Feast}

After a day spent at home resting, watching football and doing super fun things like cleaning the oven and ironing my bedspread, we enjoyed our 20th annual New Years Day meal!

I gave myself gorgeous white linen napkins with a metallic gold monogram for Christmas last year (ha!) and they were the jumping off point for my table. It was sparkly and festive and felt especially festive for the new year ahead. I used my gold bamboo napkin rings and tied gold leaf ribbon in a bow to the tops of them. I loved the extra bit of sparkle.

I put down a white bedspread from my linen closet as a tablecloth. I love the texture of it – and that it goes straight through the washer and dryer easily. I used our Butler’s Pantry plates and Waterford Millennium Flutes.

I ran a few votives down the center of the table, and added a vase of flowers that had been on my coffee table. I have had the place cards for years – I laminated them and we reuse them often. I found the disco balls in my ornament tub, left over from some project years ago I suppose.

John said our blessing and Honey picked a toast from our Rising to the Occasion book.

At each place setting, I included a bell topped with a big white satin bow and gold leaf ribbon. It is our tradition that we each also offer a toast for the coming year based on which glass we got out of the millennium set. We rang our bells after each toast! This year, I had prosperity, John had happiness, Honey had love and Whit had health. I don’t keep track of who has had what – I just grab the first four glasses I see and set them at the table.

Our menu includes pork, hoppin john, greens, cornbread, pecan pie, sweet tea and sparkling grape juice. It’s a meager meal by most standards, but one we all love to welcome a new year.

After dinner, we each wrote down our top wish for the coming year on wish paper. I came across it last year and thought the boys would enjoy it. We collectively decided to keep them personal. We retreated outside and lit them on fire as best we could – it was a damp night! We came back to the table and ended our evening with dessert.
