Savannah Mansions

Ever since I was a little girl in love with Scarlett O’Hara, I’ve daydreamed about living in one of the gorgeous mansions along Savannah’s oak lined Victory Drive.  When we were down there earlier in the month, I noticed that my very very favorite AND Mother’s favorite are both now for sale.  Want to take a little tour with me?

920 East Victory Drive $1.7M
Realtor.com says: Located on picturesque Victory Drive, this is a unique home that many have tried to replicate but cannot duplicate. The stately architecture of this home exhibits the best of traditional design through symmetry, majestic scale, and elaborate detailing.

The sweeping staircase that draws you to the second floor, the 11 foot ceilings, the spectacular fireplaces there is a lot to absorb, each detail more precious than the last. The first floor has a flow that makes for the perfect space to entertain, should it be over a hundred guests or an intimate gathering of family. The foyer is flanked by the music room, once used as a receiving room for guest to the left, and the formal living room to the right. Both have fireplaces with a gas burning coal basket. Just off the dining room is the solarium which offers a 180 degree views to the natural beauty outside. To the rear of the dining room is the study. The kitchen is located on the rear of the home and is equipped with the finest of modern conveniences including professional appliances, custom cabinetry & granite counters. Not to be overlooked are the keeping room and rear staircase that provides quick access to the floors above when entering from the porte cochere.

The second floor, with its 12 foot ceilings, has four unique bedrooms, each with a fireplace. There is a surprising amount of living space as the area surrounding the staircase acts as a mezzanine, if you will. The largest guest bedroom has a private bathroom and doors to the front veranda while the other two bedrooms share a bathroom. The master suite has a large fireplace, double French doors to the front veranda as well as built-ins to hide a computer center and television cabinet in the sitting area. The master bathroom is a great retreat with a large, free standing claw foot tub, separate walk-in shower an antique double sink basin with marble counters. Not to be forgotten is the walk-in closet, a special feature that is not found in many homes of this vintage. The third floor offers a large room with 15 foot ceilings, multiple walk-in attic space, a full bathroom and 4 alcoves large enough to place a bed in each!

In the rear of the home, through the garden, is the carriage house. Complete with 3 spacious garage spaces and a two bedrooms suite with full bathroom.

Majestic oaks, stately architecture, sweeping staircases, spectacular fireplaces, verandas, mezzanines and a porte cochere???  Well, I don’t mind if I do!

The internet can be a beautiful thing.  Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted a peek inside these walls?!?!?  If one of y’all buys one of these, pinky promise to invite me over!!!

  1. 920 Victory Drive has always been my hubby's favorite Savannah mansion. I am a bit more modest…I will take a "smaller" house on Washington Ave.:) Every time we visit Savannah, we take time to drive around that area and look at houses. Of course, Ardsley Park would be perfect for us as empty nesters. We have friends who live on 53rd st and I love their pretty brick bungalow. Thanks for sharing!!

    1. There are some gorgeous ones on Washington Ave and throughout Ardsley Park. Mother and I will put a movie on in the car for the boys and drive around for an hour just looking :-)

  2. That first house is perfect. I'll take it. We are looking for a house, and if that was here, I'd be on it like white on rice. I love it! Of course in Denver they sell houses in the millions and they don't even have central a/c. Have you ever?

  3. OMG what beautiful homes! Being the romantic that I am, I could just see myself living the royal life with a husband named Beau and two perfect children and a little white dog named Scooter! (Ha!!). Honestly, they are beautiful, and on the days when my non-existent husband, two imperfect children, and part time dog Pepper start to work my nerves, I'll take an out of body moment, sit on the veranda and quietly sip my mint julep.

  4. These are all so gorgeous, I don't know how to choose which one I like best. Beautiful, beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing these magnifcant mansions.

  5. I love Savannah! It is really kind of out of the way in my circle of travels, so I've only been there a few times, but I've never seen any of these homes. Thanks so much for the fun tour!

  6. I grew up in Savannah too and used to daydream about owning that second house. Now that I've seen the inside, I want it even more! Thanks for the tour!

  7. The first house is beautiful but oh my goodness I just fell in love with the second house. My hubby and I are looking for a house to buy (we rent right now)… I think these might be a little out of our price range though. :)

  8. My husband and I got engaged in Savannah so it's a very special place to me. If I win the lottery, house 2 is the one for me. It looks so light and airy and I love the kitchen.

  9. The second house at 920 has always been my favorite too. I lived in Savannah for about 7 months a very long time ago, down on Jones Street, just when a lot of the restoration was happening, near Pulaski Square.

I used to love to cruise Victory Drive even then, and every time I go, I have to do a driving tour to look at the houses. It is sad to see the state of disrepair some of them have fallen into. It takes SO much money to maintain these old beauties, not to mention to staff just to live there.

It is so nice to see the interiors — when I lived there, the few of these I got to see on the inside were very stuffy with kitchens that were meant for the "help" — not so nice.

  10. So beautiful, I spent a week in Savannah and did get to see the mansions but only on the outsides. Too bad, I can't move there and buy one. Thanks for sharing.

  11. 920 Victory Drive is the family home of my college roommates former in-laws. I have attended pre-wedding parties and cocktail events at this wonderful Savannah home several times in the late 1970's. You might otiece a family christening gown that is framed and hangs above one of the beds in a bedroom on the second floor. When my roommate was married the second floor veranda that completely encircles all of the second floor rooms was the area where wedding gifts were displayed. If anyone has seen the movie "High Society" with Grace Kelly, the layout that week-end reminded me of the movie. The house is incredible and am so glad other people like it as much as me.
