Treasures

One evening down in Savannah I was hunting around in the garage for a screw driver (Mother and Daddy-O went out) to replace batteries in a game when I uncovered a box of treasures.

The precious Bible is inscribed in my fathers very own handwriting.  Given to him by his mother when he was only six.  The same age as little Whit.  (He had wonderful handwriting, no?!)

The illustrations are so very sweet.  I especially loved the pages he had doodled on, coloring in Jesus’ hair with pencil for example, because I could envision him sitting through a church service passing the time.

The little black book holds addresses, dates, birthdays, Christmas lists and so much more.  I have spent hours pouring through it – trying to figure out who it belonged to!  Daddy-O thought it was his father’s, and it very well may have been, but I think somebody else took it over.  There are two distinctive handwritings and he wouldn’t have referenced himself on his own Christmas shopping list.  I really, really love trying to figure these things out.  I’ve even tried to find information about a person listed in the address book that would have lived VERY close to me here in Atlanta back in the 1950s!  (No luck, yet.)

There are years of Christmas lists in here.  I love the earbobs and pressed powder gifts.  So sweet.

And the shirt, slip, hose and gloves sizes.  I seriously wish I had more (ie. any) opportunities to wear outfits with gloves!!!

Daddy-O generously let me bring these two treasures home.  His Bible has joined my collection of family Bibles in the living room, and the little black book sits on my desk in the office because I’m just not done with it yet :-)  There’s not much I love more than treasures from the past.

Happy Monday, y’all. I’m headed to the bank because the littles ROBBED me with their PERFECT report cards.  Time to pay up…

  1. Precious! I have my Mother's childhood Bible as well as my husband's Daddy's and they are among my favorite treasures. And the address book – what a fun little mystery!

  2. Being an amateur genealogist, I love finding things like this to add to my family history! It was so sweet of your dad to allow you to take them. I have my late mother in law's address book and I love it for the same reasons that you love the one you found. So interesting…

  3. EAR BOBS!!! My grand mothers always said that and I can just about recall my (mental) eye roll perfectly! They did not consider ear bobs age appropriate for me when I began wearing them and certainly would not have appreciated me PIERCING my baby girls' ears before they could even roll over by themselves. Times change, but what would I give to have my very own grandmothers fussing about my babies' ear bobs today? Savor those mementos…

  4. I love things like this! Those are so sweet. My mother-in-law keeps a binder of all the meals that she makes for all the different holidays, birthdays, etc… She writes down her menu and what recipe she used. She also writes who attended the dinner and funny/remarkable moments. It is so fun to look back at 40 years of meals. We still use sayings every year that appeared in the book years and years ago. For instance, more than one person every year at Christmas says, "I never thought I'd live so long as to see a gift as nice as this". Something my children's great-grandmother used to always say. She passed more than 10 years ago, but we say it multiple times every Christmas and remember her warming our hearts.

  5. I know a Thelma that lived in Visalia Ca during that time. She is in her 80's now. I'll have to find out her maiden name. I love these types of things.

  6. I love things like this as well!! Almost our entire family on both sides have recently done the ancestry DNA and have learned so much more about our families. It is such a neat thing to see their marriage certificates, passport requests; or how far back your tree goes and where it may unexpectedly lead.

  7. Oh man. The address book. With the Palmer method script. Four digit phone numbers.Like time travel. How I yearn for such slower times!

  8. What wonderful treasures, indeed! After my mom & dad passed away, I received my mom's Catechism workbook she'd used when she was a child. It had her writing throughout the book, and I love looking at her handwriting again. That was sweet of your Daddy to let you have the bible and address book. I hope you figure out who the address book belonged to. Have a wonderful week!

  9. I had a Bible just like that when I was a little girl. I think that our church gave them out. My Grandfather kept a journal for every day of his life. He would write in the corner every penny that he spent and what he spent it on. Thank you for the memory!

  10. Oh, my goodness!
    I LOVE things like this!
Last summer we cleaned out my granny's attic and found boxes of treasures from where her parents owned one of the original motels in our town. There was even the hand written guest register book! I swooned for days!!

Your treasures are even better, that little bible…oh, my word!! ♥♥

  11. I love these treasures too! It's so interesting to me to see what went on, what they discussed, shopped for, found important, etc. Precious memories, indeed!
