runDisney Star Wars Family 5K

Back in April, we did our first runDisney event as a family! When we saw the Star Wars 5k fell during Spring Break, we were in. The event kicked off the day before the race at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex for the race expo.

We were up at 3:30 AM on race morning to gear up. That wake up call is always the worst part! Two of us on the dark side and two of us representing the light side…

We hung out with characters and grabbed a light snack while we waited to head to our corral. There were so many great characters out and the DJ was so much fun!

We are corral A and about to take off running at the start line when it is announced that due to inclement weather in the area (no sign of it at that time) the race has been postponed. They say that everyone must evacuate the course. Well, it was mass chaos and we ended up all the way inside of one of the Future World pavilions in Epcot. It was around 7:30 AM by the time we were sent back to the start line. Unfortunately, they did away with all corrals at that time. To further compound the issue, many parts of the course were narrowed due to flooding. It.was.a.mess. It poured rain on us the entire 3.1 miles and there was no on-course entertainment due to the weather. Such a bummer!

Running through Epcot was a highlight, as usual. The empty pavilions looked even more magical with the weather and I love all of the Flower & Garden Festival topiaries out during this time of year.

Due to the weather, John took off and said he’d see us back at the hotel. The only evidence we found of him was this pic that popped up on our PhotoPass as he crossed the finish line. Or crashed across the finish line. (red shirt on left).

In spite of it all, it was all smiles at the finish line. It was not the most fun we’ve had at a race, but we did it! I only wish this hadn’t been the kid’s first runDisney race experience. They are usually so great!

I’m not sure we will easily convince them to do another one any time soon. They are usually not conducive to a school schedule anyway. That being said, I know there are more in my future. After a half and a 5k this year, I think the 10k is my sweet spot. <3
