Palm Sunday and Resurrection Rolls

As we have done on many a Palm Sunday, we spent this morning in the kitchen talking about the Easter story while making “resurrection rolls”. However, today we watched mass online and had no palms. I tried not to let that get to me, but as Easter draws closer I feel more unrest, sadness and anxious than I have over the last month.

Resurrection Rolls

3 tubes crescent dough (to make 24 rolls)
package of large marshmallows
1/2 stick of butter, melted
bowl of cinnamon and sugar mixture

1. Lay all of the ingredients out and preheat oven to 400.

2. Give each little their allotment of large marshmallows.  Explain that the marshmallow represents Jesus, our sweet savior.

3. Have them generously coat the marshmallow in the melted butter.  Tell them that this represents the embalming oils.

4. Next roll the marshmallow in the cinnamon and sugar mixture, to represent the spices used to anoint the body.

5. Help them tightly wrap each marshmallow in a triangle of crescent dough.  This step signifies the wrapping of Jesus’ body after death. Repeat the process for the rest of your rolls, racing to finish before all the marshmallows have been eaten.  This year we used well greased muffin tins – one for each roll.

7. Bake for 10 minutes, until browned and puffed.

8. Remove from oven and serve.  Have the kids break open their roll to find it empty inside!  He is RISEN!!

Note: I could only get my hands on 2 rolls of crescent roll dough and extra large marshmallows, thanks to two dear friends. We made 12 resurrection rolls this year and cut the marshmallows in half. Making the most of what we have!! (Which is a lot – these things are so unimportant – and we are more grateful than ever.)

I hope that you and yours are well as we navigate Holy Week. <3

  1. This is amazing. I have never heard of this. So do you actually taste or get any gooy-ness of the marshmallow? We always go out for Easter dinner as I have to cook all the other holidays. So this will be something fun to do on Easter Sunday. Thank you

  2. We’ve always loved doing Resurrection rolls. This year we had plenty of marshmallows but no crescent rolls… and you’re right, this isn’t what is important. But still.

I’ve felt more unsettled the last week or so myself, as we move toward Easter but I’m not sure what the difference is. I DO know that on the third day He rose again and so I have a hope that cannot be shaken.

Thank you for continuing to be a bright spot in my day – praying you and yours stay safe and healthy, friend. ❤️

  3. I have always wanted to make these but didn’t think about them before we went to the store, and once our weekly trip is done, we don’t go back. :( Here is something to make you chuckle, my husband went online to check out Palm Sunday masses and find the shortest one. He found one at the Denver basilica that was 28 minutes. Do you remember the scene in Tangled where Rapunzel sings her song really fast, and the mother’s hair just kind of goes “poof” at the end? That’s kind of how I felt. :) Have a blessed Easter with your family. May God give you peace.

    1. Haha! I love that story. Palm Sunday mass is loooong. My moms in prayer group all helped each other out with getting supplies for these. I get not making a second trip out. We are the same way.

  4. Happy Easter, Amanda. May your family all stay safe and continue to find joy and gratitude in the season. We’ll get through this and we must all pray for our President. God bless you. Thank you for showing your traditions that make things seem more normal. Keep it up! :-)
