Auburn Family Weekend 2024

We were off to Auburn last weekend for our very first Family Weekend and had a spectacular time! We arrived just in time for happy hour at our Lake Martin rental we shared with four other couples. We divided up food for the house, and therefore enjoyed B’s pot roast, peas and mac and cheese. (She was my first friend at GT and pledge sister and our kids have known each other since birth, even living hours away.) The crew of kids came over for the night to relax, catch up and eat. It was tremendously heart warming to hug John’s neck!

Saturday was the dreariest of days but that didn’t put a damper on my JOY! We started with a lazy breakfast, then lunch at Niffer’s at the lake. Then, we were off to campus! We met John at the Sigma Chi house, which was just swarmed with guests. We loved meeting a few of his pledge brothers and his cute date, and enjoyed the house tour he gave us. Honey was thrilled to see one of his fraternity brothers there, who has a Sigma Chi sophmore! We got to hear the pledges do their Auburn chants and sing the song to their national sweetheart who was visiting for the day. I just cannot get over the school spirit here.

We spent the rest of the afternoon popping around the “white tents”. So many folks are from Atlanta that we saw people from home throughout the day. We also met up with a few of Honey’s fraternity brothers at the SAE house (they were SAE at GT).

We ended up watching the game at Live Oaks, which was lucky since the bottom fell out of the sky. We crashed back at the house. Sunday morning we enjoyed coffee at the house and said our goodbyes. We headed back to Auburn and took John to quick breakfast at Amsterdam Cafe (I didn’t love it). He was super tired and had three tests to study for so we ended up canceling our plans to attend his Honors College induction ceremony. He was happy to have those hours back in his day and we were happy to get home earlier than planned after traveling so much lately.

I’ll admit I have been in a bit of slump since he left. Leaving him felt significantly easier this time after seeing him thrive in his spaces and with his new friends. Until next time… War Eagle!

  1. I’m a Sigma Chi mom! (or is it alumni Mom?) My college mom years flew by – this week we all went to our football game as a family of alumni. Enjoy getting to know a new college town. 😃

  2. What a great time. How is Whit adjusting to John being away from home? I have seen a lot of information about how parents understand to prepare themselves for a child leaving the nest. But there is no real way to prepare a child for their siblings moving out. I’ve noticed it with my own adult teens. It’s a weird loss for them.
