Celebrating Seventeen

For seventeen years he has brought joy in ways I never could have imagined. And even today, I still find myself overcome with gratitude that I get to be his mother.

He’s funny and quirky, smart and honest, sensitive, laid-back and wonderfully independent. His dry, witty humor is years beyond where it should be. He does well in school though he’d always prefer quite literally anything else. Most afternoons you’ll find him on the golf course, most evenings with his cello in hand.

At home, he jumps in to help with any task, no fuss, no complaints… usually no words at all. He’s quiet, steady and endlessly kind. His kitchen creations keep surprising us, he loves Anna and Elsa with his whole heart, and he logs a wildly ridiculous number of gaming hours with friends. And lately, he’s been heading out more and more on weekends and days off – stretching those wings in all the best ways.

I pray that Whit remains grounded in God’s love, and that he knows that his family loves him wholly and unconditionally.  I pray that he continues to know how special he is in his uniqueness and that he never feels pressure to conform or be anyone other than himself.  I pray that he is courteous and chivalrous.  I pray that he realizes you only need one or two good friends, as opposed to a wide circle of acquaintances as he navigates the teens and every year beyond. I pray these dear friends are warm, true, trustworthy and respectful, and that Whit embodies the same qualities in return. I pray that he will value hard work and see the value he brings to every table. And, I pray that he continues to be uninhibited in his happiness and know true joy. 

Happy birthday precious son. I love you more than you could ever imagine.
