Wailulu Bar & Grill at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

When we stayed at the Polynesian Island Tower last summer, Wailulu Bar & Grill quickly became one of our most visited spots on property. Breakfasts, poolside lunches, afternoon cocktails and more than one sunset dinner all happened right here. It was one of those places that felt easy and magical all at once, which isn’t always the case at Disney.

Wailulu Bar & Grill sits just off the new Cove Pool at the Polynesian Island Tower and looks straight out over the Seven Seas Lagoon. The name comes from the Hawaiian words wai for water and lulu for calm, and that really does describe the feeling of the place. There is always a breeze coming off the water, boats gliding by, and Cinderella Castle peeking through the trees in the distance. As the sun goes down, the whole space takes on a golden glow. If the stars align, it is a also a phenomenal place to watch Magic Kingdom fireworks.

The restaurant itself is small and intimate, which is part of its charm. Reservations are a good idea because it is very popular with those in the know, but walk up is definitely possible. Inside, the space is filled with Polynesian inspired artwork, much of it created from recycled materials and reclaimed fishing nets. There are fish swimming overhead and even a manta ray tucked into the far corner.

There is also outdoor seating, and honestly it is hard to beat. You can hear the ferryboats, the distant train whistle from Magic Kingdom, and that lagoon breeze. The monorail glides by, boats cruise past, and the lights of Main Street sparkle in the distance. It feels like you are right in the middle of the magic but still tucked into a peaceful little corner of the Polynesian.

The menu works beautifully for how people actually use this space. In the mornings there is specialty coffee and grab and go pastries, which made it an easy stop before heading out for the day. Lunch and dinner offer a full bar and a relaxed but thoughtful menu that is perfect for sharing.

Honey and I popped in for our own little happy hours every chance we could. The service is friendly and the drinks were tasty.

One of my favorite starters is the Ahi Tuna Crisps. They are light and airy but still satisfying, with fresh tuna, a little heat from sriracha aioli, a touch of soy glaze, and creamy avocado to bring it all together.

The Poke Bowl is another standout and far more generous than most. You get a hearty portion of ahi tuna, not just a few bites scattered over rice, along with fresh toppings that make it feel both filling and bright. I ate far too many of these in one trip!

For something heartier, the Short Rib Loco Moco was the stand-out for Whit. Tender, flavorful meat over crispy rice cakes with rich sauce and just enough indulgence to feel like a treat. The Wayfinder Burger was John’s favorite, served on a soft Hawaiian style bun with onion jam and a little kick from the volcano sauce..

And then there is dessert. The Dole Whip Sundae is just as delightful as it sounds. It is beautiful, fun, and tastes like a tropical vacation in a bowl. It is also very camera friendly, which never hurts.

Wailulu Bar & Grill is one of those places that feels like it belongs exactly where it is. It fits the Polynesian perfectly, from the water views to the art to the laid back island inspired menu. We loved it and can’t wait to return!
