Some experiences at Walt Disney World feel extra special… the kind you don’t just remember, you talk about long after the trip is over. This was one of those.
During my 50th birthday trip, we made our way to Disney’s Animal Kingdom for something I had been especially excited about – a behind-the-scenes tour with the rhino care team.
I specifically chose this experience because it was something new for all nine of us. For a group that has been to Disney more times than we can count, that’s not always easy to find. And it ended up being one of the most memorable things we did all week.
What the Experience Is Like
This 60-minute guided experience gives you rare, backstage access to the park’s white rhinoceros, the second-largest land animal on Earth. Led by the incredible animal care team, you’re brought behind the scenes to learn about these massive, fascinating animals in a way most guests never get to experience.
You’ll hear about:
- Rhino behavior and personality
- Their daily care and routines
- The conservation challenges they face in the wild
It’s equal parts educational and awe-inspiring.
Our Experience
It was absolutely spectacular. We learned so much, but more than that, we loved sharing something new together. There’s just something about experiencing Disney in a different way, especially with a group like ours. Getting to spend time with Kiama and even pet her was such a special moment (she felt like a slightly hairy basketball!). It’s not every day you find yourself standing next to an animal like that, let alone interacting with her in such a calm, intentional setting. It gave us a whole new appreciation for the work Disney is doing behind the scenes.
Why It Stands Out
The level of care, knowledge, and passion from the team was incredible. The work Disney does in animal care and conservation is truly meaningful, and this experience lets you see that side of the parks up close. It adds a depth to your visit that you just don’t get from attractions alone.
What to Know Before You Go
- There is typically only one tour offered per day
- Group sizes are very small
- Availability is extremely limited
- No phots are permitted
Because of that, it can be difficult to secure… but it is absolutely worth it if you ever see it available.
My Take
This was one of those unanimous “favorite experience” moments for our group. It felt different, intentional, and truly special. The kind of experience that reminds you there is always something new to discover, even at a place you know so well.
