There are certain Disney resorts that may not have the flashiest pools, the fanciest restaurants or the highest price tag, yet somehow guests return home completely smitten. Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter is one of those places.
Charming, compact and full of atmosphere, French Quarter has quietly become one of the most beloved moderate resorts at Walt Disney World. And after multiple stays here myself plus countless client stays over the years, I completely understand why.

Why I Keep Recommending French Quarter
Over the years, this has become one of my most recommended moderate resorts for clients looking for a relaxing Disney stay that still feels special without venturing into deluxe resort pricing. It has a romantic, peaceful atmosphere that appeals just as much to couples and girls trips as it does families with young children.
And honestly, in today’s Disney World, “easy” is a luxury. French Quarter is compact, calm and manageable in a way many Disney resorts simply are not. There’s very little chaos here. You aren’t hiking across sprawling grounds after a long park day. Transportation is straightforward. Dining is convenient. The atmosphere is relaxing.
This is not typically the resort I would choose over a deluxe if budget allows and deluxe amenities matter greatly to your family. But within the moderate category, French Quarter consistently stands out as one of the strongest options on property.

The Overall Feel & Theming
French Quarter is inspired by New Orleans’ historic French Quarter district and Disney really captured the atmosphere beautifully. The resort feels colorful and lively without becoming overdone. Wrought iron balconies, gas lamps, jazz music and lush landscaping all combine to create a resort that feels distinctly different from anywhere else at Walt Disney World. There’s a warmth to it.
It feels smaller, quieter and calmer than many Disney resorts because it is. French Quarter is Disney’s smallest moderate resort and that compact footprint is one of its biggest advantages. At the end of a long park day, not needing to walk what feels like another mile back to your room is a luxury in itself.

Resort Rooms
The guest rooms have received refreshed touches inspired by The Princess and the Frog and I think Disney handled the updates very well. The theming feels subtle and elevated rather than overly character-driven. You’ll notice nods to Tiana woven throughout the room design, but the rooms still feel clean and calm enough for adults to enjoy too.
The rooms themselves are functional and comfortable with two queen beds, decent storage and enough space for families who primarily use the room as a home base rather than a destination in itself.
Because the resort is so compact, I rarely feel strongly about paying extra for a preferred room category here. Most buildings are already within a very manageable walk of the main amenities, which can save families a bit of money without sacrificing convenience.
This is one of the few Disney resorts where I truly feel the layout works in guests’ favor.

One con worth mentioning is the motel-style layout. All rooms open to exterior hallways and none have balconies or patios. For some guests, that won’t matter at all. For others, especially those accustomed to deluxe resorts, it can feel noticeably different. I do think it’s an important distinction to understand when deciding whether French Quarter is the right fit for your vacation style.
Personally, I do find it can be a bit noisier in the mornings and evenings. I think guests naturally use their “outside voice” because technically, they are outside.
It also means the room’s only source of natural light comes from a window facing the exterior walkway. During the day, you’ll likely keep the curtains mostly closed unless you’re comfortable with people regularly passing by and occasionally glancing in.

Dining & Beignets
Now let’s talk about what many people associate most with French Quarter: the beignets. The Mickey-shaped beignets from Scat Cat’s Club Café are iconic for a reason. Served hot and covered in powdered sugar, they’ve become one of those quintessential Disney snacks people genuinely look forward to. And yes, they’re worth it. There are also seasonal varieties, dipping sauces and even boozy Baton Rouge beignets for adults.

Beyond the beignets, Sassagoula Floatworks offers a food court style quick serve menu. I find the options to be pretty limited, but all have been good.

Another hidden gem at French Quarter is Scat Cat’s Club. Over the years, we have enjoyed a bite to eat and listened to incredible live jazz there.
The Jazz Fusion Band typically plays Friday through Sunday evenings beginning around 7:30 PM, and it adds so much atmosphere to the resort. Sitting there listening to live jazz after a park day truly feels transportive and honestly quite unique within Walt Disney World.
This is one of those amenities that really elevates French Quarter beyond what many guests expect from a moderate resort.

One thing to note is that French Quarter does not have a table service restaurant. Guests can walk over to Riverside for additional options or better yet, hop on the boat to Disney Springs for dinner.
Transportation & Location
Transportation can absolutely make or break a Disney resort experience. While guests here don’t enjoy the use of expedited transportation like monorails, walking, boats or skyliner access, the bus setup here is typically much simpler and less overwhelming than many other moderate resorts. Fewer internal stops and a compact layout mean transportation often feels more efficient and less chaotic overall.

French Quarter also offers boat transportation to Disney Springs, which is genuinely such a pleasant experience. There’s something really relaxing about ending the evening with a quiet boat ride back to the resort after dinner.

Guests can also easily walk over to Riverside, which makes the overall Port Orleans area feel larger and more expansive while still maintaining French Quarter’s smaller atmosphere.
Pools, Recreation & Amenities
The main pool, Doubloon Lagoon, is playful and family-friendly with its sea serpent waterslide and splash area for younger children. There are also quieter leisure pools throughout the resort for guests wanting a more relaxing atmosphere.

Alligator jazz aficionados, a water play area, a whirlpool spa complete the area!

It’s Mardi Gras every day at the Mardi Grogs pool bar! Belly up for classic Mardi Gras cocktails and a quick serve meal to enjoy pool side, to go, or in the shaded dining area.

Just outside the pool gates is a playground that never seems to sleep and is almost always filled with little ones making new friends.

And of course, this is Disney… so you never know who may pop by. During one of our stays, we enjoyed a surprise visit from Pluto and Donald while sitting outside with coffee and beignets. It truly doesn’t get much more magical than that.

A full resort activities schedule is also offered daily, including pool games, Movies Under the Stars, campfires and more.

Guests also have access to some of the recreation offerings over at Riverside including bike rentals and carriage rides, which makes the entire Port Orleans area feel even more expansive. My favorite is the Yehaa Bob’s show in the River Roost Lounge at Port Orleans Riverside.

Who I Recommend This Resort For
French Quarter tends to work especially well for:
- Families wanting strong Disney theming without deluxe pricing
- Repeat Disney visitors looking for a return visit at a lower price point
- Families overwhelmed by large resort layouts
On the flip side, if your family highly values proximity to the parks, signature dining, extended evening hours, elaborate pools, club level service or a truly elevated resort experience, a deluxe resort may ultimately be a better fit.
This is exactly why personalized planning matters so much.
The “best” Disney resort is never universal. It’s about finding the resort that best aligns with your priorities, touring style, budget and overall vacation goals.

My Take
French Quarter continues to be one of my favorite moderate resorts to recommend because it delivers something many Disney resorts don’t anymore: simplicity. It’s charming without trying too hard. Relaxing without feeling boring. Convenient without feeling overly busy.
As always, I personally help my clients choose the resort that best fits their vacation goals and overall priorities. Sometimes that means a deluxe resort with all the bells and whistles. Other times, it means choosing a moderate resort like French Quarter that allows flexibility elsewhere while still creating a beautiful Disney vacation experience.
And for the right family, French Quarter truly can be a wonderful choice.
