I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited New York City over the years, but I think this trip made number seven. Every visit has been memorable for a different reason. Some have been girls’ trips, others have centered around Broadway, Christmas or simply enjoying one of my favorite cities. This trip was all about family.
We headed north to visit Sister and her crew, who are calling New York home for the summer. CeeCee earned a spot in American Ballet Theatre’s summer intensive after auditioning earlier this year, and Jay is taking business and theater classes in the city.
It was just Honey and me this time. John was busy with his engineering internship, and Whit politely declined our invitation. That child is a country boy through and through and was perfectly content staying home.
I have always admired the way Sister invests in her children. She doesn’t just cheer from the sidelines. She jumps in with both feet, making opportunities like this possible and embracing every adventure right alongside them. She truly is the very best mama I know. It also marked a first for us. For the first time in five decades, my sister and I are living in different states. Thankfully it is only temporary, but it certainly gave us a wonderful excuse to plan a trip to New York.
A quick flight later, we landed in New York and checked into the W Union Square. We had just enough time to settle in and enjoy happy hour in The Living Room before the S family arrived.
Together, we hopped on the subway and headed to one of our favorite New York traditions. Serendipity 3. Because really… did you even go to New York if you didn’t have frozen hot chocolate?
The restaurant was every bit as lively and whimsical as I remembered, making it the perfect place to kick off our weekend together. We laughed, caught up on all that had happened since we’d last seen each other and soaked in the excitement of being reunited in one of our favorite cities.
Before long, we were back at the hotel, tired in the very best way and ready to call it a night.
