The Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios

Every once in a while, Disney introduces something that reminds me exactly why I fell in love with the parks in the first place. The new Magic of Disney Animation at Hollywood Studios is one of those experiences.

I recently spent a day exploring this wonderful new area, and I absolutely adored it. It’s charming, nostalgic and filled with the kind of thoughtful Disney details that make you want to slow down and take everything in. I couldn’t help thinking that Walt himself would have a tear in his eye seeing the art of animation celebrated in such a lovely way.

What makes this space so special is that it isn’t just about meeting Disney characters. It’s about the artists, imagination and creative process that bring those characters and stories to life.

The Magic of Disney Animation brings together several experiences, each offering a different look at Disney storytelling.

Off the Page! Character Greetings

I particularly love the concept behind Off the Page!. Rather than placing characters in generic meet-and-greet locations, Disney has created beautiful environments inspired by the different stages of animation.

There are spaces dedicated to storytelling, layout, traditional hand-drawn animation, computer animation, lighting and special effects. Each has its own personality and Disney characters to meet.

I had the chance to meet Donald and Daisy, along with Chip and Dale. Those two chipmunks will always have a special place in my heart because Whit absolutely adored them when he was little. He called them “the Chales,” and we still laugh about it all these years later. Seeing them brought back the sweetest memories!

I love that the environments are part of the experience rather than simply a backdrop for a photograph. There’s so much to look at, and the entire area feels like a celebration of the people and creativity behind Disney’s animated films.

Olaf Draws! Animation Class

Another highlight is Olaf Draws!, where guests can learn to sketch a Disney character with a little help from everyone’s favorite snowman.

The experience combines Olaf’s personality and humor with drawing instruction from Disney Animation artists. You follow along as the artists share techniques and stories about their work, creating your own Disney character drawing along the way.

I have always loved the opportunity to learn a little about animation at Disney, and I’m delighted that this experience brings drawing back into the spotlight. You certainly don’t need to consider yourself an artist to enjoy it! And the finished drawing makes one of my favorite souvenirs to bring home.

Drawn to Wonderland and More Animation Magic

One of the sweetest spaces is Drawn to Wonderland, a play area inspired by the beautiful concept artwork of Mary Blair for Alice in Wonderland. It’s colorful, imaginative and especially wonderful for younger guests.

While I was exploring, Alice herself was there playing with the children! She hosted a little tea party with some, played hopscotch with others and even paused her adventures in Wonderland to share a sweet hug with one of her littlest admirers. It was absolutely darling and exactly the kind of spontaneous Disney magic that I love.

Another experience is the Disney Once Upon a Studio Theater, featuring the wonderful short film Once Upon a Studio. It’s a celebration of more than a century of Disney animation, bringing together beloved characters from across the years.

I think this is such a fitting addition to the area. After exploring how Disney stories are created, guests can enjoy a film that celebrates the incredible collection of characters those artists have given us.

Don’t Miss the Courtyard!

One of my favorite surprises was simply spending time in the courtyard. There are so many delightful details tucked throughout the space, and it’s worth slowing down to appreciate them rather than heading straight inside.

While I was there, Pluto was playing Duck, Duck, Goose with a group of children, and the White Rabbit was wandering around greeting guests and posing for pictures. These weren’t the traditional character greetings where everyone lines up for a quick photo. They were playful, spontaneous interactions that made the whole area feel alive.

Who Will Love the Magic of Disney Animation?

One of the things I appreciate most about this addition to Hollywood Studios is that it offers something a little different from the park’s headliner attractions.

It’s a wonderful place to slow down, unwind and explore at your own pace. You don’t need to organize your visit around Lightning Lane reservations or rush from one attraction to the next. You can wander through the exhibits, enjoy the artwork, meet a few characters or simply soak up the atmosphere.

And because the indoor experiences offer a break from the elements, it’s a fantastic option for those hot Florida afternoons or rainy days when you need to get out of the weather.

Families with little ones will especially enjoy the character experiences and Drawn to Wonderland play area, while older children and adults can appreciate the artistry, nostalgia and history behind Disney animation. I think longtime Disney fans will find it particularly special.

A Wonderful Addition to Hollywood Studios

I’ve always had a soft spot for Hollywood Studios. I love the atmosphere, the music, the Hollywood nostalgia and the connection to Disney’s history in entertainment. The Magic of Disney Animation feels right at home here.

In a park filled with thrilling attractions and big entertainment experiences, I appreciate having something that celebrates the quieter magic of Disney. The artistry, the storytelling and the imagination that started it all.

I’d encourage you to allow some time to explore rather than simply rushing through for a character photo. There are so many details to appreciate, and I think Disney fans of all ages will find something to love.

I spent a wonderful day taking it all in, and I left feeling just as enchanted as I hoped I would. It’s sweet, beautifully imagined and a lovely reminder that before the theme parks, the castles and all the spectacular attractions, there were artists bringing stories to life one drawing at a time.

I think Walt would have loved it.
