Nothing But A’s

Fourth grade is the year when school becomes “real” around here.  Tests, projects, etc. are graded on a traditional number scale and report cards come home with letter grades.  This was immensely more motivating to John than the 1-2-3 scale he had been graded on the past four years and he set his sights on achieving “nothing but A’s” for the whole school year the very first week of school!

Well, Honey and I had the immense pleasure of watching him walk up to the podium and receive the very award he set out to get last week.  It made me teary with pride and joy.  He tirelessly and consistently worked for this, all year long in every subject.  More so than being “smart” (he has yet to test into the gifted program, much to his dismay), I saw this year that he is persistent and determined.  He had to study, he never procrastinated and he did his best on every test, assignment and project.  I pray that his desire to succeed and his willingness to set high goals for himself stays with him.

A tremendous thank you and a gigantic hug goes out to his incredible teacher.  Mrs. B was a dream.  She was so positive, incredibly engaging and extraordinarily creative in how she taught and ran her classroom.  She allowed the kids an enviable amount of autonomy and trusted them with great liberties (for 9-10 year olds) from the very first day of school.  I truly wish that we could bottle her up and take her with us next year.  I feel certain that she will be one of the few teachers that John remembers for the rest of his life.

It is such a joy and a blessing to have these boys entrusted to us.  I ask myself every day how I got so lucky, and put my whole heart into doing my best for them.

I’m in the midst of planning our special snack for the last day of school.  It’s one of my favorite days of the year!!!
xoxo
