Never Forget

It sounds cliche, but it seems like yesterday that I was gathered around the small, fuzzy television in the largest conference room at work standing horrified and shocked as the events of 9.11.11 unfolded.  I will never forget that day, the aftermath, the heroes, the loved ones lost and the country and world so saddened and shocked by such outward and senseless horror.    September 11 2013   The tvs and radios will stay off today, as we are still not ready to broach the subject of terrorism with John (and certainly not Whit.)  But, like last year and the ten years before that, I will carry a heavy heart.    Our great country is exceptional, but not invincible.  We must never forget. xoxo

  1. I can promise that like you…its a day I have never forgotten. I think because the utter shock of it all…had ones mind realing…its seemed impossible…but it wasnt! The mind was saying this is "REAL" and yet how can anything so Horrific be real…even tho history has other horrific events in it's past…Thank you for my first reminder this morning :)

  2. I was in the Capitol Building that day, covering what was supposed to be an education news conference which quickly turned into an address on what was still unfolding.

The Pentagon had been hit at that point and one of the two towers. The plane which went down in PA was purportedly headed to where I was sitting.

The Capitol Bldg was evacuated at the close of Kennedy and Mrs. Bush's address, streets were mobbed, mass transit shut, and by the grace of God I found a single cab that was willing to take me to my parents' house in Potomac.

It was there that I saw the full extent of the devastation on TV.

    I will NEVER FORGET.

  3. You are so right in protecting the innocence of your sons. I wish I didn't have the images in my head and heart from 12 years ago. Something I will never forget.
    Blessings to you.

  4. I too wish my DS didn't know he is 9. However his elementary school has had a moment of silence since he started in K5. At that age and in 1st he didn't understand 2nd he started asking questions and we told him ( DH is a police detective) so we had rather explain it in our own words than someone at school. We tell him that many heroes were made that day and that heaven got many angles as well! God Bless you for keeping your boys safe :)

  5. The media specialist at John's school does not have any non-fiction books relating to that horrible day. She believes that the students are too young to fully grasp the information if it is introduced in elementary school. I grew up during the Cold War and was five during the Bay of Pigs. I definitely didn't fully understand all that was happening but I knew to be scared. To this day I still worry about nuclear attack. I hope that children today will be able to live a full life without such fear.
