Geocaching

Mother and I have been talking about starting the littles up with geocaching for ages and finally did it!  I am far from an expert on the subject, but will share everything I know.  If I peak your interest, look here for a compendium of details on how to get started!!

Think of geocaching as a real-world treasure hunt.  Using the Groundspeak Geocaching App, we navigated to specific sets of GPS coordinates and then hunted high and low to find the geocache (container) hidden at each location.  There are 2,347,990 active geocaches and over 6 million geocachers worldwide!!  All you need to start is a GPS enabled device and a membership (free).  When you uncover a geocache, you sign/stamp/label your name in the log book and, for some of the larger boxes, you may leave a trinket and take a trinket.

We spent our day treasure hunting around Savannah’s barrier islands.  The first geocache took forever to find, but after that we really got the hang of what to look for and how to use the app.  The littles adored it, and Mother and I found it pretty fun to boot.

Our very favorite find was on the Tybee Rail Trail.  Not only was the couple of miles we walked just perfection on such a gorgeous day, but we loved pouring through the geocache loaded with trinkets and trackers.

We wrapped up our exciting (er…exhausting) day with a picnic out at Fort Pulaski, watching the container ships roll into port while the littles ran wild for a good hour or so.

We simply cannot wait to see what treasures we can uncover back home and on our future travels.  The littles are already scheming to create and log our very own geocache!!

  1. My youngest son enjoys geocaching too. It's neat to see all the different trinkets everyone leaves. It's a nice family activity too. :) Your boys will definitely enjoy it for years to come!

  2. Never heard of this but boy does it sound like fun !! My little one is way to young for this but hubby and I would have so much fun with this :) Thanks for sharing

  3. Fun! Sounds like a great activity, especially during the summer months when they get bored. I am always game for an adventure.

  4. What fun! There is one here in downtown Annapolis, MD. A geocache is hidden in the park on my street. I must confess I have reluctantly given extra clues to frustrated tourists who cannot find it. Now I go inside so I don't get asked for help. Isn't the hunt what makes it fun?!
