On My Bedside {Beautiful Creatures}

Well, well, well, what’s old is new again.  It’s been tooooo long since I shared an “On My Bedside” review.  I spent most of my evenings this summer with my nose buried in the Beautiful Creatures series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

Now, I know it won’t come as a surprise to y’all that I found these in the young adult section of the library.  I mean, I was headed towards the literature section (obviously) when these practically fell off the shelf at my feet.

There are seven books in the series.  Here’s the synopsis for the first, titled Beautiful Creatures:

Ethan Wate is haunted by dreams of a girl he’s never met. When Lena Duchannes moves into his small southern town of Gatlin County, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her. And he is determined to uncover the strange connection between them, even if it means uncovering the one secret that could change everything.

In the interest of complete and total honesty, I will say these books are good enough.  They aren’t earth shattering, you aren’t going to stay up all night binge reading and they won’t linger long after you’ve finished them.  But they were certainly entertaining enough for me to read the lot of them!

Since it’s been so long, I’d LOVE to know what’s on your bedside!!  I am definitely in need of some good reads.

xoxo

  1. I am sure you have read The Girl on the Train, but if not, you should. I also like Liane Moriarty’s books. So far I’ve read The Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies. I am waiting for the rest of her books on my online library.

    1. I haven’t read Girl on the Train! But I have read many of Moriarty’s!! Loved Husband’s Secret!

      1. Amanda, they even talked about Girl on the Train on the today show this morning — George S said he’d have to go and pick it up, which made me laugh. I think I read it in a day and a half. Many people compare it to Gone Girl. I can see the similarities, but it’s better. Read it before the movie americanizes it. :) Also, try Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls (?). I didn’t enjoy her other book nearly as much, but they are two parts of the same story.

  2. I haven’t read anything this entire summer, except Scarlet (the “sequel” – term used loosely – to Gone with the Wind). I have so many on my list… I think next up will be We Were Liars or In the Light of What We Know.

  3. Just finished Go Set a Watchman and it was so good!! It made me want to re read The Mockingbird Next Door. I also recommend The Girl on the Train as well as The Best Yes. I wish The Best Yes had been around when I was a young mom.

  4. I just finished Wonder and it was so good. My book club read Me Before You this summer and it was also good. Kate White’s The Wrong Man was an intriguing read. On my bedside still needing to be read are the latest by my regular faves; Elin Hilderbrand, Jane Green, Mary Kay Andrews and Jennifer Weiner.

  5. Currently reading Harper Lee’s newest, Go Set a Watchman. I have loved To Kill a Mockingbird as long as I can remember and was so excited when this sequel/prequel was published!

    1. I need to reread TKAM. It was required in high school so I didn’t love it as much as I probably could. I have always been an avid reader but only on my own terms :-)

  6. I finished LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE by Jessica Knoll. It will be made into a movie. I enjoyed it but it is a bit like Gone Girl, but not quite as dark. I thought it was a good book and hard to put down. It is the authors first novel, and loved some of the messages of the book, especially the ending. I also loved KILLING JESUS by Bill O’Reilly, which is told more from a historical perspective rather than a religious one. Wonderful book! I am now reading DEAR CAROLINA by Kristy Woodson Harvey, which I have not read enough to write a review. It’s an adoption story, and written by a southern author. It is her first novel and it was highly recommended to me. My oldest daughter is adopted, so of special interest to me. I always love your reading posts!

  7. I’m just starting All the Light We Cannot See. The beginning has me sucked in though :). Hoping to get some reading in over the weekend. Happy Almost Friday!

  8. This is not what I am currently reading but I love Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It has all of my favorite things in a book – history, romance, foreign lands. It is part of series also if you like the first book.

      1. So glad you love it too! I think I have reread it ten times. I find something new to love about it every time.

  9. Just read the Low Country series-Summer Girls, Summer Wind, and Summers End- by Mary Alice Monroe. Set on Sullivan’s Island. Also have you read The Hypnotist’s Love Story by Lianne Moriarty? Excellent book.

  10. I finished LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE by Jessica Knoll and loved it. It is a little like GONE GIRL, yet very different. Another novel that is hard to put down. It will be made into a movie. Reese Witherspoon secured the movie rights. It is a first novel by the author. Loved the ending and the message behind it. Also loved KILLING JESUS by Bill O’Reilly. It is told from a more historical view rather than a religious view. I really enjoyed it. I am now reading DEAR CAROLINA by Kristy Woodson Harvey. It is about adoption and was highly recommended to me. She is a southern author and this is her first book. My oldest daughter (I have 3) is adopted, so of special interest to me. I love when you do these book posts!

  11. I picked up Astronaut Wives Club this week at the library. I can’t seem to put it down! And, of course, I think I will go into a depression when the show is over in 2 weeks!!

  12. A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley. Loved the authors note at the end. Haha I had my husband listen to me read it and then poor children had to suffer through it too:)
Outlander series is great. Really enjoy your blog. So cheerful and helpful :-). I shared your garage makeover with Josh and he was like, well, I see Lilly and lots of white… I can see why you love this! Enjoy the rest of your summer☀️

  13. I loved The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah and also The Fall of Marigolds by Susan Messiner, they are both good reads.

  14. Just finished an interesting read, re Jane by Patricia Park. It is about a Korean American girl who lives in FLushing NY . My DIL is Korean American and this book really helped me to understand her culture better. Now I am reading Bennington Girls are Easy. You would think I am a younger reader in stead of a 60 yr old reader!! Hope you are feeling better…we were up in North Ga over the weekend and I did not catch up on your blog until this afternoon. I also came back to this post to find out what everyone was reading!!
