On My Bedside {The Girl on the Train}

After so many of you recommended it during my last On My Bedside post, I finally read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.  I’m beyond late to this party, but I can safely join in saying that it’s one of the best books I’ve read in a long time!!

Going in, I thought I knew what this book was about, but I couldn’t have been more off base.  I had it completely confused with Orphan Train, when in reality it’s much more along the dysfunctional, often sinister and sometimes moving book that is Gone Girl.

GirlTrain

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

All of that is to say that if you haven’t read it yet, do it!  It’s easy to read and hard to put down.  Two things I LOVE in a good book.

Let me know what you’re reading.  I get all of my best material straight from y’all!  Speaking of reading, I’m off to mystery reader… in my Snow White attire, with his Disney Classic Story Book in hand.  The baby’s teacher encourages costumes and he has raved about their special guests all year long.  Every time they have one he BEGS me to be the next one.  I can’t wait!!

  1. Mystery Reader sounds so fun!

Girl on the Train just came in for me at the library – can’t wait to pick it up! I’m currently reading Blueprints (Delinsky) & just finished Did You Ever Have a Family.

  2. I read Girl on the Train on our drive down to Disney! It was a great book… kind of disturbing, but great.

I have “in the Unlikely Event” by Judy Blume waiting to be read after I finish up “All Day and a Night” by Alafair Burke. I’ve read all of her dad’s books, and now I”m on to reading hers– they are murder mystery types of books- those are some of my favorites. :)

  3. Thanks for the rec! This one sounds like one I’d love.

(The time traveling nurse series never got me. Really wanted it to.)

I like my kid to see me reading so easy read is good!

  4. Natalie, I, too, read The Girl on the Train as well as Gone Girl. I, for one, love “twisted” plots! If you haven’t read Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, you need to. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah and Sarah’s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay are also great historical fiction novels. I’m a big fan of Jeffrey Archer, too, and his Clifton Chronicles are excellent. I’m anxiously awaiting 6Cometh the Hour, volume 6 that is coming out in February 2016. Happy reading! :)

  5. I couldn’t put it down! I read in like two days. I thought it was amazing. I actually liked more so than “Gone Girl”. I felt like you could figure out GG but Girl on the Train kept you guessing. So glad you finally read it.

  6. I loved Girl on the Train…it was a nail biter for sure!! I am waiting on Kate Morton’s new book. A good book I just finished was called Just Show Up by Kara Tippetts and Jill Butelyn. I followed Kara’s blog until her death and her friends are keeping it going so I still read it every day. Just Show Up is a book I wish I had read years ago as it tells the reader how they can walk through suffering with their friends and family. I am like most folks….what do I do? am I being intrusive? etc. This book really gets down to the nitty gritty. I am in the stage of life when many friends are going through hard things so it was very helpful.

  7. You are the cutest mom!

I’m reading a few things (as is my norm….). The Royal We – just straight trashy fiction, but I love it. A Walk in the Woods – hilarious. Outlander – love the show and the book is just as good. The Heir – the fourth in The Selection series.

  8. I’ve been trying to decide what to read next…so your post was very timely. I just ordered The Girl on The Train, from Amazon, and also ordered All the Light We Cannot See. All The Light came highly recommended by a friend. So…I’m anxiously awaiting my Amazon delivery. I finished Temple Secrets by Susan Gabriel a couple of weeks ago. It was enjoyable. You might appreciate the Savannah connection in that one.

  9. I am reading “The Storied Life of AJ Fikry” and so far really like it. It was summer reading for my senior son and he said it was the best book he has ever read so I had to give it a try. Liking it a lot so far and recommend for a any book lover.
