On My Bedside {Beach Town}

Mother lent me Beach Town by Mary Kay Andrews and it made for a fantastic vacation read while down at Disney (… in September… this post has been lost in the drafts).    She is one of my very favorite authors and I always look forward to her new releases.  Many of them are set in Savannah, Atlanta and the South and all are good for some laughs, maybe a few tears, a little romance and a lot of Southern humor.

Beach Town was light, entertaining and predictable.  Don’t let that deter you… I mean, it is what it is.  Mother and I were just chatting about how we actually enjoyed learning more about the movie industry from this little book than the budding romance that was probably intended to be the key plot line.

Greer Hennessy needs palm trees.  As a movie location scout, picture-perfect is the name of the game. But her last project literally went up in flames, and her career is on the verge of flaming out. Greer has been given one more chance, if she can find the perfect undiscovered beach hideaway for a big-budget movie. She zeroes in on a sleepy Florida panhandle town called Cypress Key. There’s one motel, a marina, a long stretch of pristine beach and an old fishing pier with a community casino-which will be perfect for the film’s explosive climax.

There’s just one problem. Eben Thibadeaux, the town mayor, completely objects to Greer’s plan. A lifelong resident of Cypress Key, Eben wants the town to be revitalized, not commercialized. After a toxic paper plant closed, the bay has only recently been reborn, and Eb has no intention of letting anybody screw with his town again. But Greer has a way of making things happen, regardless of obstacles. And Greer and Eb are way too attracted to each other for either of them to see reason.

Between an ambitious director and his entourage-including a spoiled “It Boy” lead actor-who parachute into town, a conniving local ex-socialite, and a cast of local fangirls and opportunists who catch the movie bug, nothing is going to be the same in Cypress Key. Now Greer is forced to make some hard choices: about the people and the town she’s come to care about, and about her own life. True love is only for the movies, right? Can Greer find a way to be the heroine in her own life story?

Mary Kay Andrews’ books are just the quintessential beach read, in my opinion.  If only beach season weren’t so far away…. sigh.

I’d love to know what you’re reading!!  Y’all always have the very best books on your bedsides.

xoxo

  1. I’m currently not reading anything! Having a hard time getting back into my reading groove. ?

  2. On another note, I picked up my Valentine straws last night at the Dollar Tree and was delighted that they were SIX for a dollar!
    I can’t wait to get my tags for them! Thanks, Amanda. :-)

  3. A cold day at the beach is better than No Beach! We are headed to beach this weekend…high of 67 on Saturday. I may have to grab this book for my weekend read! Thanks!

  4. I love her books! The Savannah books (with Weezie and Bebe) are my favorite. Spring Fling is also a good one. I just picked up one of the books she wrote under the pen name Kathy Hogan Trocheck. I also like Elin Hilderbrand’s books. They’re great beach reads and they all take place on Nantucket.

  5. I love Mary Kay Andrews and have read all her books. I’m sure you’ve visited her booth at Seaside Sisters at Tybee, too. My all-time, absolute favorite author is Dorothea Benton Frank. If you haven’t read her books, start today. She is wonderful! Also, Mary Alice Monroe has some great beach reads as well. For long, family-filled British books, you’ve got to read Barbara Taylor Bradford; A Woman of Substance remains one of my top books ever. And her Cavernon series is like reading Downton Abbey.

  6. This is off subject but I could not find an email address for you. Our sweet Max, a 10 year old golden retriever, recently died and we are thinking about getting a golden doodle because of the shedding problems with golden retrievers. We love the sweet good natured personality of golden retrievers and have read that golden doodles share the same traits. Have you found that Elsa sheds very much? Also, I am in GA, too, and wondered if you would share where you got Elsa? Thank you

    1. You can reach me at [email protected] Elsa doesn’t shed at all. She’s a goldendoodle x goldendoodle breed. A straight golden x poodle would probably shed some. I’m no expert though. She is from Mustard Seed Ranch. They came recommended by 3 different people that don’t know each other. Elsa is practically perfect in every way :-) *practically*
