Musings

Happy Wednesday from frozen Atlanta.  It’s cold and sleeting and just awful.  In my mind, if it’s going to be this miserable is should just snow already!

Anyhoo, here’s a little family pic from last week.  Whit is practicing his groundhog day smile I think.  My poor babies are destined for braces.

I love love love this little piece.  Too often I see and hear people that feel threatened by others.  And often it is women and mothers feeling like that about other women and mothers.

Now, back to the cold.  I’m back to roosting in “the spot” for as long as I can every morning.  And evening, for that matter.

Knock, knock…  These are only my favorite shoes ever and while I’ve had them for eons I don’t believe I’ve ever shared them.  I call them “vintage” Lilly.  Because they are oooold.  I really wish she would come out with more fun flats.

I’m still on my mission to perfect the pancake flip and find the perfect recipe.  This time I went with Todd’s Famous Blueberry Pancakes at the recommendation of a fabulous reader.  They were GOOD… but I love a good buttermilk recipe as well.  And I’m still working on my technique.  More to come, y’all.

Y’all I had a positively dreadful morning this week when my coffee maker started spewing coffee ALL OVER MY KITCHEN.  Like clear across the room.  It was practically a family member and lived a good, long life here.  The worst part of all was not the gigantic mess, but that I was faced with a morning sans coffee, which just totally won’t do…

… and I could have literally kissed my dear neighbor when she came to rescue delivering a fresh hot cup to my door on a freezing cold morning.  My neighbors are the BEST!

I love a good bowl of greek yogurt with fruit and honey for breakfast, but this is my very fave on the go option.  It’s so yummy!!!

I’m still trying out places to “become a regular” per my 40×41 bucket list.  So far I’ve hit Starbucks (good coffee, atmosphere, not sure they would ever really know me) and Waffle House (good cherry cokes and hash browns, but sticky tables).  I’ve said it before, but there is a dire lack of nice little local places in my  neck of the woods.  I did pop into the bagel place but they only take cash so I left.  Can’t be worrying about always having cash on hand.    If anybody that lives by me has any suggestions, send me an email.  I’m all ears!

Speaking of chain restaurants, we tried Pollo Tropical for the first time.  Is it just me or is that place pretty good?!  The plantains were YUM!

I had Honey take down the light in our bedroom so that I can paint it but it has been too miserable to go out!  I can’t wait to share what I’m working on in there :-)

That was a lot of musings about food, looking back.  Probably because I’m starving right now.  Early breakfast before a meeting led to an early lunch which has me wanting dindin like stat.

xoxo

  1. Love your musings posts! Oh my about the Keurig all the way around. :-0 They do know us at our local Waffle House. We used to have a Caribou where EVERYONE went, was so much fun, but they closed it when the other company bought them out. Bummer!!! I tried a new pancake recipe this morning that a friend posted…3 ingredients, 1 egg, 1 banana, 3 TBS flour. Oh my, so easy and soooo yummy. She added blueberries to hers as well, but I didn’t have any on hand.

  2. Loved your post and LOVED that oyster mug! My son is a barista at Starbucks and he absolutely has regulars! He even has their coffee order in the works when he sees them walk in the door! BTdubs, it doesn’t hurt that their coffee is delish!

  3. My pancake recipe is the one out of BH&G cookbook – you know, the red & white checked one? Works every time. Becoming a “regular” fascinates me – there are lots of places that would work around here. Come be a local in Madison! ? Keurig – eh. I feel your pain on the no coffee, but I just don’t love my Keurig.

Musings posts remain my fave! Happy (cold, nasty – we STILL have baseball!) Wednesday! xo

  4. I’ve been using Martha Stewart’s “Best Buttermilk Pancakes” recipe for years. (I’m sure you can find it online) The only change I make everytime I cook these, is to use more butter in the skillet. :)

  5. Pollo Tropical is sooo yummy! We hit it almost every time we visit my in-laws in Atlanta from Bham. We are having a lunch date Friday. We are thinking Antico (another fav of ours) or the taco place you posted about.

  6. I chuckle every time you mention that you want to find a place where you can become a “regular”. You already have that – and in such a BIG way!! Your “regular” place is here – on your fabulous blog that brings a daily delight to so many!

You’re like Jack Nicholson’s character in The Bucket List. :) One of the things on his list was to “kiss the prettiest girl in the world”. And indeed he did, but not the way he had originally imagined. Instead, he kissed the granddaughter that he never knew he had.

So welcome, once again, to the place where everyone knows your name, and where your face always elicits a smile. You’re a lucky girl, indeed.

  7. Oh my goodness…I love reading your musings posts. So funny! It actually turned cold enough even here that I broke out our down comforter (I had thought about getting rid of it). I love that picture of Whit…one to show girlfriends down the road. Love the vintage Lilly. I would die without my Keurig…literally…I would fall asleep on the way to work and cause a massive fiery accident. We have tons of mom and pop restaurants here. Wish I could share one with you :) I’ve been so absent lately…gearing up for Miss Georgia preliminary and then it all starts…

    1. I forgot to add in my pancake tip. Krusteaz Buttermilk pancake mix (I just add the water). Fry some bacon in your pan first. Pour the grease off into a coffee cup. Take a paper towel and clean some of the more crispy bacon bits out of the bottom of the pan. Then scoop a little of the bacon grease you poured off and put it back in your pan. Pour in your pancake mix and then tilt your pan from side to side until the bacon grease has come in contact with all edges of your pancakes. It’s just a light amount of bacon grease. It gives them flavor and makes the edges super crispy…sort of like Cracker Barrel.

  8. Practice your pancakes with Krusteaz Buttermilk Light and Fluffy Pancake Mix. Just add water! I use club soda instead of plain water and the pancakes are perfect. Use a hot nonstick pan, a little cooking spray and a thin wide spatula for flipping. The first one or two will be imperfect, then you will be on a roll! Good luck, Amanda!

    1. You are the second person to recommend. It’s a bit of a drive for me but worth trying! And yes, the other place would get way too pricey :-)

  9. Bless your heart…coffee everywhere and none to drink! As to pancakes…I like the Bisquik pancakes. I have tried many recipes but I always come back to that recipe. You can add your own touches. And patience is key in making pancakes. Waiting til there are little bubbles all over the top is so hard to do but you must. And last, I have tried the Special K breakfast sandwiches and I really like them. I will have to look for the Jimmy Dean brand. I am considering giving up sweets for Lent but Decatur got a Krispy Kreme this week and I am not sure if I have the resolve to drive by there on a regular basis and not stop!!

  10. I’ve used the recipe on the back of the Aunt Jemima box for years and my kids love them! I use the original, but they also make a buttermilk. Sometimes I switch out the oil for some applesauce. And often add either mini chocolate chips or blueberries. Good luck!

  11. We’ve become recognizable at Chick-Fil-A…or my kids have anyway! Lol! They have family nights on Tuesdays which coincides with my Book Club and Bunco so the kids and my husband go often. We dropped by on a Friday night and ate inside and one of the cute college girls working stopped by and called my kids by name. I really LOVED it.

  12. Sorry about your coffee pot! My husband calls our part of town a “cultural wasteland” and I agree in that we are missing cute little restaurant spots with atmosphere like they have in town. I’d love to be a regular at S Wine Bar or S but that could get expensive. Try the Fluffy Pancakes recipe on All Recipes or we also like Logan Turnpike Mill’s whole wheat pancake mix. You can buy it at Whole Foods near the bulk spices.

  13. I know what you mean about being a regular. I worked in my parents restaurant in Louisiana for years and we had a lot of regulars. Some would stop in two or three times a day. I knew what to start preparing the moment I saw their car I pull up. Fifteen years later I could probably still anticipate with fairly good accuracy. An alternative is to find a great bar and go there on date nights each week. Of course, my littles are grown so we have more opportunities for that these days. I love reading the tales of your sweet boys and wish there had been similar sources when my kiddos were small. It would have been nice to have some solidarity. They grow so fast and the teen years can be anything but pretty.

  14. The Aretha Frankenstein Pancake mix is the bomb! I buy at my local Publix (Nashville). It’s from a little “hole-in-the-wall” breakfast place in Chattanooga. Love your blog!
