Easy + Inexpensive Cafe Shelf {DIY}

As promised, here is easy DIY number two from my powder room update!!   I am always stumped as to how to “decorate” a potty.  I mean, do you put stuff on the back of the toilet?  Do you hang art over it?  Do you install shelving?  Do you pretend it doesn’t exist?  So many questions…  I think I would tend to just ignore it except for the fact that there is really only one good wall left in this teensy room to put stuff on.  And y’all know how I love my stuff.

So, I set out to find a shelf the perfect size to fit in this space.  At about 24″ long, it seemed like it shouldn’t be a problem.  But after much hunting and searching, I was still empty handed.  That’s when I set out to Home Depot to come up with an easy, cheap, DIY alternative.  I LOVE how it turned out!

I originally intended to hang two shelves, one on top of the other.  Well, Honey poo-pooed that when he gave the toilet a faux test drive (ew) with me holding the bottom shelf in place.  No good for men sitting on the potty as they would bump their heads.  (ewwwwwww)  At that point, I had already bought, opened and painted supplies for both shelves so the other went to live at bestie M’s home.

Here’s what you need for TWO shelves:

4 good sized wood corbels – Home Depot

1 stair tread, cut in half by the nice folks at Home Depot – they are 48″ long and work perfectly for two 24″ shelves

Paint – I used Luxe Gray One Step Paint by Amy Howard

To assemble, you simply hang your two corbels, sit the shelf on top and screw them together!  OR… don’t screw them together if they won’t be messed with much.  They are very sturdy and substantial and at $50 for the pair, a better deal than you will find anywhere else!

Happy DIYing, y’all!
xoxo

  1. How do the corbels attach to the wall? Those look pretty heavy! Which sounds like pretty big holes (plural) in the wallpaper…

  2. Love it! I am currently in the final stages of renovations on the condominium I purchased. I finally get to start decorating! Yay!!! Thank you for the shelf idea, I’m going to put one in my small bathroom too!
