Driveway Decorating

My boys still play in the driveway. A lot.  Riding scooters and bikes, shooting hoops, playing with nerf guns and light sabers and such is a daily occurrence around here – both before and after school and all summer long.  So, since I usually sit out here with them (we are on a busy street and Whit is only 8, ya know?!) I was itching to update my little driveway sitting area.

I already had the chairs, throw pillows and pot.  I just added new flowers in the pot AND planted a new gardenia right in the bed behind the chairs that smells amazing.

After scrubbing and washing the old ones trying to get them clean, I finally ordered new seat cushions from Home Decorators.  I searched high and low for cheaper options to no avail and HD had a huge variety of sizes so I finally bit the bullet.  I’m a little disappointed to say that they hold water like crazy so I try to remember to sit them inside the garage when we have a deluge coming.  Of course, that will help keep them nice and clean but it is still a bit of a pain.

The umbrella is from Target and I love it!  I admired some with bold strips and scallops and even pagoda tops, when I decided this $50 number would be just fine.  It has a cute black and white spot print and is a bit smaller than most so it works well here.  I also love that it has an aluminum post because I’ve lost too many umbrellas with wood posts to wind when they cracked on being knocked over.

I found the table at At Home here in Atlanta.  It was inexpensive and I love it!  I originally went looking for a garden stool but loved that this one wouldn’t break AND had a totally flat top.  I’ve found my other garden stools to not be a good idea for holding drinks because the sweat makes them slide off and they are all slightly curved on the top.

So, with a few quick updates, I’ve got a pretty cute and comfy spot to monitor the outdoor shenanigans all summer long!!

  1. I also have a driveway seating area, even though I don’t *need* to be out with my boys anymore. I often sit there and read when they’re out there anyway. I’ve never thought to add an umbrella!

Your revamped seating is lovely! xoxo

  2. I keep my patio chair pillows in a big deck box – it keeps them nice and dry. Storing the umbrella will help it last longer but it’s an inconvenience. There are also ‘covers’ you can order on Amazon for the chairs and umbrella.

    1. I know – I stored everything at our old house but then I never used it! These chairs have weathered fabulously and the original cushions got a LOT of years out of them. I think we had them for 10 years outside and never brought them in. I haven’t looked at umbrella covers – good idea.

  3. I love this post Amanda, like you my girls are always playing on the driveway with our neighbors, they are 4 and 1 so I need to be out there and it gets really hot! This is a great solution!! I have 2 matching chairs, now I need to find an umbrella and stand :-)
    Thanks,
    Lindsey
