Summer Fun {Georgia Aquarium}

When the kind folks at the  Georgia Aquarium invited us to come visit, we decided it was the perfect fit for the next installment of the boy’s Summer Fun series!  It was our first visit in years and I have to say, the aquarium really does appeal to all ages.

Watch as the boys make their way through the aquarium’s lot of fascinating galleries, experiences and attractions…

We arrived at 9:15AM and spent four hours at the aquarium.  It was definitely got more crowded as the day went on, so I would recommend going early!

As far as favorite experiences, don’t miss the Waddle Walk in the Atrium.  This short presentation typically takes place between 10 – 11 a.m., and you get to see the penguins march down a little ramp and then “visit” with their fans. Georgia Aquarium staff are known to notify guests as they are preapring for the Waddle Walk.

The aquarium has more than 10 million gallons of fresh and marine water and more aquatic life than found in any other aquarium.  You will be absolutely in awe of the various galleries.

We caught dive presentations two times during our visit.  In Ocean Voyager they occur daily at noon and 12:30 p.m.; and in Tropical Diver at 10:30 a.m.

Our three favorite things about our visit were the Dolphin Celebration, the Under the Board Sea Lion presentation at Pier 255 and the touch pools.  Photos were not allowed at either the dolphins or sea lions but let it suffice to say that these are not to be missed!  We were absolutely in awe at both shows!!!

The Dolphin Celebration happens at 11:30 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.  The theater was full when we walked in 15 minutes ahead of time so we were in the splash zone.  The boys thought this was outrageously fun, so I went along with it.  We did get quite wet, so take the warning seriously :-)  If you don’t want to be splashed and don’t want to be in the nose bleed seats I would get there at least 30 minutes early.

The Sea Lion presentation is at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.  We flew right in the door at 10:25 for the 10:30 show and grabbed a front row seat on the right side.  We thought it might be a terrible seat because there was a pole in front of us, but it was excellent!!!  The sea lions were almost an arm’s length away.  We did get splashed here too, but nothing like in the dolphin show.  Don’t miss this one – it was like nothing we had ever seen before and we all have a new love for the sea lion!!

The touch pools are located in Ocean Voyager, Cold Water Quest and Aquanaut Adventure.  One of them was closed as it was night time for its inhabitants.  These are always fun and the boys love anything hands-on.

Lastly, make sure to catch a show in the 4-D Funbelievable Theater.  We saw the Sponge Bob movie, much to my kid’s delight.  They currently are running Coastal Predators: A 4-D Experience, Ice Age: No Time for Nuts 4-D and SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D: The Great Jelly Rescue!

Georgia Aquarium also has a free and easy-to-use mobile app.  It features fun facts and information about the marine animals, guided audio tours and updates on things like show times, programs, character appearances.

I hope that y’all are enjoying this little series – we are preparing for our last one next week.  We sure are having fun!

  1. I need your help!!! My kids and I need somewhere to hang out while visiting Atlanta this week. My husband has business meetings one day so we will not have a vehicle. Do you think we could kill a couple of hours at the aquarium and is there anything else within “safe” walking distance? How close is Coca-cola? They would love that! Any other suggestions, I have two young teens and one tween :)

    I know we want to go to the Varsity to eat. Any other family friendly restaurants we should try?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes, you can do the aquarium an world of coke all at once – nice safe area! There is also the college football hall of fame and big skyview atlanta ferris wheel close by.

    2. We had a great time at the World of coca-cola and the aquarium! My kids were in soda heaven. The dolphin show was our favorite and amazed by the size of the shark whale! Thanks! We look forward to coming back soon!
