I devoured The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware over our fall break. I know it may sound odd, but I love a good dark read to ring in October. It was suspenseful and haunting and I couldn’t figure out what was going on. I did find the lead a bit annoying and wanted to ring her neck at times… or shake some sense into her… but it was still a good read.
In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…
With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.
If you have any recos for books along these lines, I’d love to get them! I have been watching things like The Conjuring all week and Honey would be very pleased if I took this to a book rather than tormenting him with horror movies.

DIXIE DELIGHTS DELIVERED
I just wrote this down, Amanda, so I can pick it up. I love books that are recommended by bloggers. Thanks. Hope you have a great night- xo Diana
We read it last year for book club. Some have read the Couple Next Door and liked it better.
I was just going to recommend this! It’s along the same lines as this and Gone Girl…kind of disturbing, but couldn’t put it down.
This book is on my list! I’m currently reading Written in My Own Heart’s Blood – the last in the Outlander series (at least until Tell the Bees I’m Gone is realeased. SOON I hope!)
I Cannot wait for Tell the Bees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG! I have a ridiculously unhealthy obsession with this series. For the love….bring on the bees already!
The Couple Next Door is dar and hasn’t played lefty of twists and turns! I highly recommend!!
Well, that comment got so jumbled! I meant to say that it has plenty of twists and turns! So good!!!
I just requested this book from my library. I am the #137 patron requesting this book. I hope I get to read it before 2020.
Haha! That’s when I know a book is good. A friend gave me this one :-)
The couple next door (couldn’t put it down),The kind worth killing, and The Good Neighbor.
I have seen this book and I had been on the fence about purchasing it at Target. Thanks for the recommendation.
We read The Life We Bury by Allen Eskins for book club and it has been one of my favorites that we have read in a long time. It had some twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and was just different than the normal chick lit I read. :- ) I went on to read his book The Heavens May Fall and I loved it, too. Both are available at the library.
Because you mentioned “dark,” I recommend Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris. I could hardly enjoy because it was so disturbing, but I could not put it down.
haha, yikes! I feel that way about the Conjuring though.
Ruth Ware also wrote “In a Dark Dark Wood” and I liked that one better than Woman in Cabin 10- some other good ones I’ve read lately that are on the darker side: Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris; The Couple Next Door by Shari LaPena; All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda — these were all these types of suspense thrillers and were easy to read.
Some other really good books I’ve read lately: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (it’s 1.99 on amazon for the kindle version right now, I think!!), and if you like Mary Kay Andrews type books- All of the “Lowcountry Liz Talbot” books by Susan M. Boyer were easy, quick reads. Also, have you seen the Mary Kay Andrews cookbook? I bought it at Sundog Books in Seaside this past weekend when we were at our friends’ place for the break and I LOVE all of the recipes in it. Looking forward to trying them this weekend.
It was so good!! I read it while we were in Disney last week!!
There are TWO Couple Next Door books. B.A. Paris version is good. I also just read her book The Break Down. Highly recommend that too.
The Silent Wife. Again there are two. I read both. Loved both.
And the Marriage Lie! So good.
In addition to the many excellent suggestions you’ve already gotten, I recommend “The Secrets She Keeps” by MIchael Robotham. There is another book with that same title so double check the author.
The “women’s suspense” sub-genre does seem to be the hottest thing right now!
I felt the same way about the lead character in Cabin 10!!!! I did really enjoy it, and the authors other book – In a Dark, Dark Wood. The Kind Worth Killing is fantastic…definitely dark and full of twists and turns.
Have you tried the Cormoran Strike novels from JK Rowling (writing as Robert Galbraith)? He’s a detective. Assuming you’ve already done Girl on the Train… get a YA book ready for John and give Eye of Minds by James Dashner (The Maze Runner) a whirl.
