Podcasts Part 6 {Currently Listening}

Listening to Podcasts is still my #1 past time. Something I do just for me that I enjoy a lot. I listen while driving, cooking, exercising, waiting in carpool, etc. Now, in the true crime genre, I cut these off when the kids are around. But the others are completely acceptable for young ears!

I have four new favorites in the true crime genre. I still listen to many of my old favorites as well!

Hunted

From 1974 to 1978, serial killer Ted Bundy killed at least an estimated 30 women and girls across six states. He slinked into basement apartments, stalked beaches and preyed on college campuses. In “Hunted,” a special, three-part podcast, the Coloradoan delves into Bundy’s crimes, his victims and his little-known time terrorizing Colorado.

The Officer’s Wife

In April 2016, the wife of a Griffin, Ga. police officer is found inside a locked closet. Two shots have been fired from her husband’s service weapon. She’s the victim of an apparent gunshot wound. But what really happened inside that closet and in the hours and minutes before shots rang out?

The Officer’s Wife is a new podcast from 11Alive and VAULT Studios. Over six episodes, investigative journalist Brendan Keefe, who has been investigating this case for three years, walks you through the story of a small-town romance gone wrong and the life-changing events that ripped a family apart.

Down the Hill

Abby and Libby – two young girls murdered. Investigators are searching for the killer using their biggest clues: a grainy picture and a recording of his voice from the victim’s phone ordering the girls “Down the Hill.” 3 years and 50,000 tips later, it’s a mystery that still haunts the small town of Delphi, Indiana while police say the killer may walk among them.

Man in the Window: The Golden State Killer

In Man in the Window, Paige St. John, a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter has uncovered never before revealed details about the man who would eventually become one of California’s most deadly serial killers. From Wondery and the LA Times comes a new series that traces his path of devastation through his victims’ eyes.

Branching out from true crime, these two have been so interesting to follow! Two very different iconic American women, each with incredible stories.

Following Harriet

Following Harriet is a podcast that takes a closer look at the life of one of the bravest and most extraordinary women in our country’s history. It also puts Harriet in a broader context, examining the 19th Century experience of African Americans, especially in Virginia.

Dolly Parton’s America

In this intensely divided moment, one of the few things everyone still seems to agree on is Dolly Parton—but why? That simple question leads to a deeply personal, historical, and musical rethinking of one of America’s great icons.  Join us for a 9-part journey into the Dollyverse.

This one has been just for fun! I have a friend enrolled in the Yale class online and when I stumbled on the podcast one day I was hooked. I also figure it tempers my true crime list a little.

The Happiness Lab

You might think more money, a better job, or Instagram-worthy vacations would make you happy. You’re dead wrong. In “The Happiness Lab” podcast, Yale professor Dr Laurie Santos will take you through the latest scientific research and share some surprising and inspiring stories that will forever alter the way you think about happiness. She’s changed the lives of thousands of people through her class “Psychology and the Good Life,” and she’ll change yours, too.

I have enjoyed this one with the kids for a long time now. Season 3 is out and it is still so good!

The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel

The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel is a scripted podcast for middle grade kids, performed by middle grade kids. It is a fun, high-quality, serial mystery that can be described as Goonies meets Spy Kids meets Stranger Things for 8-12 year olds.

  1. Jumping in to share a book recommendation… if you have enjoyed Following Harriet, you may enjoy The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. It is a fictional account of a teenage girl and her journey north after escaping a slave plantation in Georgia. While fictional, it chronicles many of the atrocities bestowed upon slaves in that time, including other more subtle forms of imprisonment during that time. My son had to read it for his freshman English class at Georgia College (GCSU) and recommended it to me. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it!

  2. I didn’t know about Following Harriet and she’s one of my very favorite historical figures! I will check that out for sure. I haven’t listened to the Happiness Lab but I love Gretchen Rubin’s Happier podcast…and Dolly’s America is on my radar but I haven’t listened yet. Thanks!!

  3. Oh, goodness – I haven’t heard of any of these, but I’m now adding them to my list. I just finished 22 Hours: An American Nightmare, and I’m currently listening to Hide and Seek about the disappearance of Nancy Moyer.

    Thanks for the suggestions! xo
