Things We’ve Learned

I vaguely mentioned a week or so ago that we were trying to teach the boys some practical life skills while sheltering at home. I got a lot of questions and threw together a list of things we have covered. This wasn’t a grand plan. Rather, as Honey and I have done regular housekeeping things we involved the boys.

Outdoors

  • lay pine straw
  • spray for weeds
  • scrape and paint a bench
  • screen in a porch
  • clean ash out of the fireplace
  • start a fire
  • blow the driveway and sidewalks
  • pressure washing coming soon

Housekeeping

  • fold sheets
  • iron a collared shirt
  • polish silver
  • change a light bulb
  • clean out a closet
  • wash a car
  • bathe the dog

Kitchen

  • load the dishwasher how mom likes it
  • grill a steak on the big green egg
  • make fried rice on the griddle
  • prepare a full “American” breakfast with eggs, toast and bacon

For Fun

  • play poker
  • play spades
  • make a list on alexa and check it in the app

Happy Saturday!

Puzzle of the Day

Yesterday’s answer: Once. After the first one it isn’t 100 anymore,

  1. Amanda,
I think this is a great time for parents to be teaching their children “life skills”. Everything is not learned in a book and requires hands on learning and doing. My husband is very mechanical and can fix and do almost anything much in part to his late father who taught him so much of these skills when he was a young.

  2. You are teaching way more life skills than we are. But every week involves kids menu planning and cooking at least one meal. Dad is doing driving lessons, and general car maintenance- checking oil, air in tires, etc. We are all working together in the yard. Both kids got new beds and helped to assemble them by reading the included “instructions”. We are also sharing favorite movies from our childhood/teen years with them one night a week. It’s actually been rather nice.

  3. Love the lists. Boys need to know these things for sure! My husband was not taught these things growing up and at age 76 it’s a steep learning curve.

  4. This is a wonderful idea! We’ve been learning lots of things, too, but I’m adding loading the dishwasher “how Mom likes it” today – as that’s really the only way to load it. 🙂 xo

  5. Great ideas! I am sure those things will be helpful in all stages of life. My kids are grown, and they also learned some of these same things. I did have a book when they were growing up called “Life Skills for Kids”. It gave ideas for things kids could and should learn at different ages. At least my kids knew how to properly do laundry when they went to college! A lot of their friends did not!
