Black Squares

If you were on Instagram today, you likely saw countless empty black boxes as you scrolled. Many of them with the caption “muted and listening” with the hashtag #blackouttuesday. The movement was originally created by two black music executives to get people to put a hold on their regular posts so that anti-racism resources can flood social media.

In this house, anti-racism has always been and will continue to be part of the conversation and our core beliefs. I want to be explicit in stating black lives matter. Posting a black square is simply a symbol of solidarity. In and of itself, it doesn’t hold much meaning without action.

We are not just listening but learning and self-evaluating.

We are teaching and acting at home, where two young hearts and minds are being shaped.

We know we cannot afford to be ignorant or look away.

We have conversations that are uncomfortable.

We pray for justice and equality.

I often talk of having my kids look for the helpers. Racism is not a time to sit and look. They must be fearless in actively speaking out and standing up against social injustice.

  1. Amanda, Thank you for explicitly stating “Black Lives Matter.” I feel that it is very important for us to say that. I have determined, for myself, I will no longer stay silent when I hear someone say “All lives matter.” As southern white women, we are taught to be polite and not make anyone uncomfortable but for me, that is no longer enough. I have been a reader for years and so enjoy your blog-keep up the good work!!

  2. Thank you for using your platform to address real life issues-especially when they are ones that challenge us to self-examine and reflect!

  3. You’re a beautiful person inside and out, Amanda!! Thank you for posting this and sharing with everyone…❤️❤️❤️

  4. Thank you. Your children and my grandchildren will light the path for all of us to follow. I have such hope in this generation of kids.

  5. amanda – i’ve been a long time reader of yours for years. thank you so much for sharing this post and for speaking out. it really means a lot to me as someone who is a person of color that reads and loves your blog. sending you much love <3

  6. Amen, Amanda!
Proud to have you as my daughter!
And be glad that those who “unfollowed” you because you spoke you heart did so.
They are not who you want your audience to be.
    Love, Marme
