Hurricane Day(s)

Well, who would have thought a hurricane in Atlanta would put us out of commission. Only in 2020, right?! Zeta made her way through our part of town in the wee hours of Thursday morning. The power going out woke me up around 4AM. When I started to hear trees fall around the neighborhood by 4:15AM, we all relocated to the basement for the rest of the night. Thankfully, our home was just fine… lots of big limbs and yard debris to clean up but nothing that can’t be fixed with some elbow grease. We got our power back late last night, but still no wifi, internet or cell service.

I’ve alluded to this a few times since early in 2020, but we completed the last project in our 11 year “make-over” of our house… the backyard and a pool! The first time Honey laid eyes on this house he said “it has the perfect yard for a pool”, in fact. I didn’t share the details along the way for a variety of reasons, but I do promise to take pictures and do a tour next Spring when the leaves are back on the trees and the plants are blooming. The project started in early February and hasn’t quite finished (just a few odds and ends and a final inspection to come) due to many delays and materials shortages, although we have been enjoying it already. The water has been way too cold to swim in, but take away internet and power for a few hours and suddenly my boys don’t care. They alternated between yard clean up, swimming and board games.

Speaking of board games, I taught them how to play dominos with our unexpected free day!

Sister and my brother in law had a work event to attend, so Jay and Cee spent the late afternoon and evening with us. Whit and I had been excited about this for about two weeks, and unknowingly planned the perfect evening of fun with no power – cooking hot dogs and s’mores over the fire and playing ping pong! It came back on just as we were starting the fire!

Most of our friends are also without internet and some do not yet have power. Thankfully, as far as I can tell, nobody had any irreparable damage to their home or family. We got another day off of school tomorrow. To those that were in the path of the storm, our thoughts and prayers are with you!

  1. How fun is a pool for your family!! Can’t wait for more tours and info. Glad you came through the storm okay.

    1. Thank you so much! They have loved it so far. I’ll definitely share more when I do my Christmas tour!!

  2. Glad everyone is safe and that y’all weren’t without power for TOO long! (I don’t know about you, but losing power/wifi these days is almost a blessing in some ways! Love an opportunity for an “old school” family night!)

    1. Yes, it was out just long enough to hang out, play games, etc. I was stressed about work, but everything turned out just fine! My dad was able to log onto my email and set an out of office for me. :-)
