Listening Lately {Pieces of Her}

I tried my first audio book a couple of weeks ago and am kind of hooked!! I wasn’t finding many podcasts to keep my interest and have been so tired at night that Honey suggested I try to listen to a book. He does this on road trips, but it hadn’t peaked my interest until now. I used my library card and the Libby app to check out my first book! I found a new Karin Slaughter book right away, and also set a hold on a few others from my list. I listened while doing household chores, driving, walking, and even soaking in the bathtub. At first the 11 hour commitment felt daunting, but it made some of the most ho hum parts of my day fly by!

Now, on to Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter… It was interesting and suspenseful. I guess I can’t technically call Pieces of Her a “page-turner” in this instance, but it kept my attention! I didn’t love the lead characters, but did very much like a few of the secondary characters.

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

The police want answers and Laura’s innocence is on the line, but she won’t speak to anyone, including her own daughter. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

While I enjoyed Pieces of Her, it didn’t feel entirely like reading a Karin Slaughter book. She is without a doubt my top thriller-mystery author, and a long-time Atlantan to boot. My favorites are the Grant County / Will Trent series, if she’s new to you and you want to try her out!

  1. I am an average reader but would listen to books on my commute to work. I admit I new nothing of what was going on in the world (never turning on the radio/news) but loved plowing thru library books on disc. I, like you have switched to Libby and found a whole new list of audiobooks. This year I have “listened” to over a 100! I have listened to a whole new set of titles I would never have touched in print format (topics and length of books…huge books scare me I know I would never make that reading commitment)! I am hooked but at this point I plow thru so many they do tend to blend together…oops! (Also dial up the speed to 1.25 or 1.50…it makes a world of difference).

  2. I’m currently reading A Book of American Martyrs. Too soon to tell how I’ll like it.

    I haven’t ever really used audiobooks (though my boys have for years for school) but I love podcasts, so this might work for me!

    Thanks for sharing! xo
