Sunday Supper {At Home Hibachi}

John chose hibachi for his fifteenth birthday dinner and we had the BEST time bringing it home! Sister and her family joined us for the Thanksgiving night festivities. First things first, CeeCee helped me set the table on the porch! Everything I used was from my stash.

Now, we were coming back in town the night before from a week in Disney. I knew I couldn’t prepare all of this PLUS Thanksgiving and a birthday breakfast. I big time cheated on this at home meal.

We started with salad and soup. I cut up two heads of lettuce, tomato and cucumber and bought the ginger dressing from Publix (produce section). It was delicious and a great copy cat! I purchased the soup from our favorite hibachi before we left town and froze it. (Brand is Makoto with a black label.)

Next, John and Honey set to work on the main course! Honey has had the Blackstone grill for years and I share it every now and then. Now that we have it out on the pool deck, it is much more accessible and has gotten a lot more use.

First, the meat. Between the eight of us, we had 2 steaks, 2 chicken breasts and 2 lbs of shrimp. Honey used Bibibop sesame ginger teriyaki as a marinade. They cut everything up into bite sized pieces before cooking.

For veggies, we did zucchini, broccoli, onion and mushrooms. Honey and John even prepared an onion volcano for our enjoyment. They stacked it up and then poured in oil and 80 proof vodka. We had no idea what would happen – Honey thought nothing would. HAHAHA!

I purchased the fried rice from the hibachi restaurant as well and froze it in a gallon zip top. We thawed it in the fridge and they reheated it on the grill. They also did a few egg tricks, and the requisite throwing to the kids. It was hysterical and had us all in stitches.

We served everything with Terry Ho’s Yum Yum Sauce (sauce aisle at Publix). It wasn’t quite as delicious as our local restaurant, but a good stand in.

While the cooking was the main event, the kids also played plenty of ping pong, sat by the fire and soaked in the hot tub. (They did just feet before dinner.)

I made John’s favorite chocolate cassis cake to end the feast!

We’ve been staying up and outside so much later than usual with the new backyard space that Elsa now puts herself to bed on the sofa pretty much every night. <3

This was such a fun and memorable night – even more so than going to the restaurant. While Thanksgiving day has been hard on me most years since I lost Matthew, this one I felt nothing but thankful, happy and blessed. Time does heal.

  1. What a great birthday. You took a page out of Sandra lee book- semi homemade and it was perfect. Please share where did you get the tartan pillows from that are in your outdoor sitting area.

    1. I loved Sandra Lee!! I ordered the pillow covers on etsy to fit the pillows I already had. The shop was HomeLiving. Her prices were higher than others I’ve used but she was the only one that had the plaid I wanted. They are well made with zippers.

  2. How fun & special!

    Readers – Don’t forget it’s Giving Tuesday. So much need. Unprecedented. Please find a charity or two to donate to.

  3. Can’t wait for the official reveal of the beautiful outdoor space and pool! Was wondering how on earth I missed such a big update when I saw your comment on another post that you haven’t shared yet! Looks amazing and I know you must be so enjoying it during the “stay at home” phase that has lasted longer than we ever thought it would!

    1. It is! I will do a tour next spring. It just filled last month and we still haven’t even had final inspection.
