Listening Lately {The Turn of the Key}

Late last year I got hooked on audio books checked out for free through my local library and the Libby app. My usual podcasts just haven’t had a ton of new content and I am really enjoying audio books as an alternative. I typically listen (versus read) when I’m in the car, cleaning, doing laundry, washing dishes, walking, and even soaking in the bathtub. It makes the time go by so much quicker!

I was thrilled when I found The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware available early this month! I’ve enjoyed her books in the past and usually don’t find such gems without a waitlist at the library.

Truth be told, this one didn’t receive the highest reviews BUT I completely enjoyed it and never wanted to hit the pause button. I didn’t figure this one out, although I had plenty of wrong ideas along the way. It isn’t scary or (too) disturbing but just a good suspenseful read with a feeling of foreboding throughout.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the home’s cameras, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman.

It was everything.

She knows she’s made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn’t always ideal. She’s not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she’s not guilty—at least not of murder—but somebody is.

Have you read this one? I’d love to hear your thoughts! I’ve moved on to The Alice Network. What’s on your bedside?

  1. I’m obsessed with the Libby app! It’s like a game for me and I love having books deliver right to my phone and kindle. I haven’t done audiobooks though – good idea- I will add those to my queue as well.

  2. The Alice Network is amazing! One of my book club’s favorites a couple of years ago. I love listening to audio books while walking the dog. My favorites of the last year:
    Pieces of Her
    What the wind knows
    The Dutch House – Tom Hanks is the narrator so I loved this audiobook even more!
    The storyteller’s secret (I think I saw that recommendation on your page)
    American Dirt
    The bookwoman of troublesome creek

  3. Love Virgin River but am obsessed with Call the Midwives. I’m starting the 6th season. I plan to revisit all of them!!
