On My Bedside {House of Salt and Sorrows}

For my latest read, I fell back into my favorite genre – young adult fiction. Haha! In all seriousness, House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig was a mesmerizing, evocative story that I very much enjoyed.  It’s a take on the old Twelve Dancing Princesses fairytale. Here, twelve beautiful sisters live together on an island, and mysteriously die one by one. The book isn’t life changing, but rather is a lovely escape into fairytale, beauty, romance, mystery and tragedy. At the end, I was disappointed to see there wasn’t a sequel.

In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last–the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge–and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister’s deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who–or what–are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family–before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Get ready to be swept away.

As always, I’d love to hear what’s on your bedside. I’ve been binging The Crown but will need a new read soon!

  1. I always love to see your book recommendations. I have added this one to my ever growing list of books to devour this year.
    I’m currently reading “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars” by Christopher Paolin. (Author of the Eragon series…all grown up now.) It’s sci-fi but so far it doesn’t let the story get bogged down in the science and has a strong but realistic female lead. And she’s a biologist so that hits one of my interests too.

  2. loving character driven mystery “lady in the lake” by Laura Lippman . I am on Margaret’s first wedding. While adictive both book & show were put aside for 1/21 historic events;)

    1. Yes, it certainly was a historic day! I have been out of town and scheduled all my posts from Saturday – today. I caught the highlights last night when we returned to a sick kid (not covid) and a pile of work. By the time I realized, I figured anything I could have said would have been met with a barrage of negative feedback. I’ve received more negative messages in the last few months than in 10 years prior – about an outfit, something I said, something I didn’t say, a recipe I messed up on, somewhere I went, etc. I share a lot on the blog, but the majority of our life I do keep private. You’ve always been so kind and lovely to interact with – I didn’t take your comment to be mean. I just wanted to offer a little explanation. <3

  3. Just added to my Amazon cart! I’m currently reading Cataloochee, set in post-Civil War Western North Carolina. Interesting so far! I’ve finished American Dirt and The One-Eyed Man already in 2021. xo
