The Brown Hotel Louisville, Kentucky
I mentioned yesterday that I always look for historic hotels and The Brown Hotel was the obvious choice in Louisville! It was absolutely stunning inside and I was so glad we chose it.
An iconic destination inextricably woven into the fabric of the city, The Brown Hotel is opulent yet approachable – like a fine Kentucky bourbon that never overwhelms you with its history but instead entertains you with a lifetime of colorful stories.
Behind its striking Georgian-Revival façade is a blend of Old World elegance and modern-day comfort, a place where generations of Louisville’s finest have celebrated weddings and anniversaries, and corporate meeting planners have discovered unerring style and sophistication. Now nearing its centennial, The Brown Hotel reflects the rich heritage and Southern gentility that have made Louisville a hot spot for bluegrass enthusiasts, bourbon drinkers, equestrians and Derby Day revelers.
The daytime was strangely quiet. We didn’t see a soul on arrival.
We were in shock when we returned that night to find every space filled with people. A grand pianist. People sipping on bourbon at every single bar.
We even ran into a friend from Atlanta!
Whether you stay at The Brown Hotel or not, a trip to J. Graham’s Cafe for the Kentucky Hot Brown is a must! We could have eaten this every day!
While the hotel lobby, dining rooms and lounges were all spectacular, the room was very dated. There was a little confusion on arrival and they didn’t have the room available that we had booked. We ended up in one with two double beds and no sleeper sofa but were able to bring in a rollaway so that helped a little. It was all clean, and the room was large, but could definitely stand for an update on the size and quality of mattresses and general decor. :-)
Regardless, we very much enjoyed our stay here and our entire trip to Kentucky. The state was beautiful, the people were gracious and we were so glad to add another check to our USA travel bucket list. Thanks for following along!

My high school prom was held in the Crystal Ballroom at the Brown. At that time the Brown was owned by the city school system and it was ‘the’ place to have prom. I finally got my Brown Hotel hot brown last year when we stayed at the Brown while visiting family in Louisville. I, too, wondered about the grandeur of the public areas and the room furniture and carpet being left from the early 70’s. The room was a disappointment. There is a definite need for refurbishment. I thoroughly enjoyed turning all the lights on in the Crystal Ballroom all by myself. I almost felt like a misbehaving high school student.
