Podcasts Part 9 {The Thing About Pam & Truth and Justice}

I’ve been back on a true crime Podcast binge. Here are my most recent finds!

The Thing About Pam

Two days after Christmas, 2011, Russ Faria came home from game night to find his wife, Betsy, dead. He was soon charged and convicted of her murder. But Russ Faria insisted he did not kill his wife. Betsy’s brutal murder set off a chain of events that would leave one man dead, another man implicated, and expose a diabolical scheme.

It is a quick and easy listen with just seven episodes. I could listen to Keith Morrison recite his ABC’s and likely be entertained, but I was absolutely fascinated by this truth-is-weirder-than fiction story.

The Thing About Pam is also a true-crime story starring Renée Zellweger on NBC.

Truth & Justice: Catalina Palomino

On October 29, 1996, Maria Catalina Palomino was murdered in her southeast Houston apartment.  Police quickly narrowed in on 15 year old Jennifer Jeffley as their only suspect.  After interrogating her for nearly 9 hours with no parent or attorney present, Jennifer agreed to sign a statement that had been typed up by a Detective.  She was assured that if she signed the statement that she could go home.  She has been in prison ever since.

Like with all of Bob Ruff’s shows, this one left me shocked at the corruption and gross negligence of the police and DA in charge of this case. I am undecided on Jennifer Jeffley’s exact role in this crime, but can’t help but feel justice for Catalina has not been served.

Now that I have two teens myself, I almost can’t bear to consider how fast they might collapse in a similar situation. Every time I listen to a case of a teenager coerced into a false confession I can’t help but worry. The thing of it is that they were raised to respect authority and to be helpful. As was I. Not answering questions does not make you look guilty. In this day and age, it makes you smart. They are not obligated to always be helpful. They can demand to speak to their parents any time, any where. Oh, the strange and unexpected things I never thought I’d need to consider. I tend to rattle off unsolicited advise when they are stuck captive in carpool lines. I can’t count the number of quick exits the two of them have made over the years – the kind where I haven’t even stopped at the curb and they leap out “Okay thanks bye mom!!!”. HA!

  1. The Shrink Next Door! We watched the show first with Paul Rudd & Will Farrell – they were amazing! The Podcast is the actual person whose portrayed by Will Farrell (Marty) telling how the story was exposed. I watched the show with my 15 year old who loves those actors but soon got so invested in the plot. Highly recommend both show and podcast.

    I’m watching the Pam show now, I plan to dive into the podcast afterwards! Renee is so good in it!
