Fourteen!

The years just keep marching by, don’t they? Whit celebrates fourteen today. And, every single day for the last fourteen years he has brought immeasurable joy and love to our lives.

He’s funny, quirky, smart, honest, sensitive, laid back and independent.   He has a witty, dry sense of humor that is beyond his years. He’s thriving in eighth grade and absolutely loves his classes, teachers and peers. He is in his third year of cello and we are looking forward to his Christmas concert tomorrow. He just finished up his first full season of lacrosse and spends time hitting golf balls every single day that it isn’t raining. At home he helps with any job or task at any time without complaint – and usually without a word at all. He’s a quiet kid. He continues to impress us with his creations in the kitchen and he still loves every dog he crosses paths with, especially his own two girls. He logs an insanely ridiculous number of hours playing video games with friends. He is frugal and constantly asks – and then is appalled – at how much things cost. He’s active in our church youth group and, while I know he’s mine, I think he’s a pretty awesome young man.

Whit was my rainbow baby and the thing I wanted and prayed for more than I ever wanted anything in my life. Fourteen years later and I still well up with tears every time I think about how lucky I am to have him.

I pray that Whit remains grounded in God’s love, and that he knows that his family loves him wholly and unconditionally.  I pray that he continues to know how special he is in his uniqueness and that he never feels pressure to conform or be anyone other than himself.  I pray that he is courteous and chivalrous.  I pray that he realizes you only need one or two good friends, as opposed to a wide circle of acquaintances as he navigates the teens and every year beyond. I pray these dear friends are warm, true, trustworthy and respectful, and that Whit embodies the same qualities in return. I pray that he will value hard work and see the value he brings to every table. And, I pray that he continues to be uninhibited in his happiness and know true joy.

Happy birthday precious son. I love you more than you could ever imagine.

  1. Well, I remember when you sent him off to kindergarten! Happy birthday to your young man and congratulations to his parents.

  2. Your prayers for your boys are always so beautifully written/spoken! You’re a wonderful mother & they are blessed to have you as theirs!

  3. I live in Brisbane Australia and yours is one of only 2 blogs I follow. I have really enjoyed following along with you and your family and am interested in your American life – It really isn’t so different to ours in sub tropical Brisbane. I also have 2 young men now in their 30’s (how did that happen!). They have both just returned to Brisbane my youngest and his partner from Sydney and the other along with his partner from Panama. It seems we truly have a multicultural family as my youngest son’s partner is Russian whose family settled in NZ via Prague! They constantly surprise us as yours will as they move into adulthood and I can tell you it’s the best feeling.
Your two boys have grown so much in the years I’ve been following you. I think both you and your husband are right to feel proud of the two young men they have grown into.
I send birthday wishes to Whit and I hope you all have the best Christmas and that 2023 brings you and your family joy and peace.
    Lindsey Back. 💐
