Auburn University {Dorm Living Room & Kitchenette}

I’m back today to share the living room and kitchenette areas of John’s dorm! It’s an open space flooded with light and was a lot of fun to put together. Here’s the before and after…

What I love about their living room is that they all brought things they love, without a real plan, and worked together to make it their own. It turned out so cozy and homey! One mom purchased the rug, coffee table, end table and entertainment stand. A grandma donated a chair and another mom found the second on marketplace. None of us really knew what all would be arriving, but it really could not have turned out better!

They have a basket for blankets, a little bowl of candy on the coffee table, an x-box, a sweet little machine that projects stars on the ceiling, a big speaker and more. It’s the perfect place for a bunch of college boys.

There were a couple of mis-haps, one being the GIANT TV the boys got didn’t fit on the stand. One of the dad’s drove back over to help fix that after this pic was taken. And, I had donated curtains from Whit’s old room but somehow lost the rings in the move. I’ll get that fixed for them when we visit – or not – they don’t seem to mind :-)

The other end of the space houses the kitchentte. If you’ll remember, this is an ADA room so the counter space is much smaller than most suites in the building. We did a very minimal amount of work on this end. Mostly, we just helped them figure out how to organize their own individual items in the cabinets and fridge. They have a variety of countertop appliances as well. We donated our old air fryer, egg cooker and toaster. John brought his Ninja Creami. Other boys came with coffee maker and Nutri Bullet. They did coordinate to make sure there weren’t duplicates. We stocked them with all sorts of paper goods, light cleaning supplies and a giant trash can. They all have meal plans, but were excited to venture out to the grocery on their own for snacks and “second dinner” fixings. For shared items like paper products we are using the Splitwise App to divvy up costs, and plan to do this going forward.

They made use of every space to hang the items they each brought from home. I got them the Tiger flag and love the spot behind the door. Before I left I tacked the I Saw That sign up over the door. It got a LOT of laughs once discovered. :-)

The other question asked many times was about roommates! One is one of his closest friends from high school (3rd from left). One is another friend from high school that he’s known since he was 3, and a family that we are friends with (far right) In fact, Honey grew up playing baseball with his dad. The fourth is from Connecticut and was someone John was introduced to as a potential roomie through a girl from his high school a few years ahead (far left). They socialized online for a bit and finally met in person on move in day!

I’ll finish this up with the bathroom next!

  1. I love all of this. Wondering if a rolling cart might be nice to add a “bar top/island” to their kitchen area. Even just for storing all the cooking machines that need to be plugged in, but could be rolled under the counter when not in use.
