Just a couple of weeks ago on a gorgeous summer morning, Whit celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation.
I have never felt God’s love shine down so greatly upon this child as it did on his confirmation day.
It was a beautiful and memorable mass, celebrated by our parish priests and Bishop Konzen.
The Catholic Church celebrates confirmation as a sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ. It confers the gifts of the Holy Spirit upon the recipient. Whit prepared for confirmation for three years, including prayer, studies and retreats. The seven gifts bestowed upon him on this special day are wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.
Like John, Whit chose Sister, also his godmother, as his sponsor. Your sponsor can be any member of the church, and does not have to be family or your godparent. The role of the sponsor is to help prepare for the confirmation, to model the behaviors of a practicing catholic, and to ensure the readiness of their candidate. As I’m sure many of you have experienced, it was a surreal moment to see your sister walk your son down the long aisle of the church and present him for confirmation. Bishop Konzen performed the rite, which includes the laying on of hands and anointing the forehead with chrism.
Whit has known the teens that stood along side him since pre-school, through reconciliation and first communion. They have worked hard, had fun and grown together in their Catholic faith. For this, we couldn’t be more grateful or more proud.
Whit chose St. Francis of Assisi as his patron saint. Francis is his middle name (and his grandpa’s name) and he has always had a special connection to animals.
We had almost the entire family squeezed in our pew for his special day! Only CeeCee was absent due to mandatory Nutcracker rehearsal. I was SO THANKFUL John was able to attend before we took him to Auburn just two days later. <3
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
Where there is sadness, joy.
It was a monumental day that we have looked forward to since his first breath. God Bless Whitfield Francis!

Congratulations to you all on Whit’s confirmation. This brings memories back of my son’s confirmation and my sister as his sponsor. Due to the large number of people it was held in the high school’s sports hall. As they walked down the aisle, up the stairs, onto the stage, my poor sister fell. No one on that stage came to her assistance. She apologized afterwards to my son as she felt so embarrassed for him, his reply was “Everyone will remember my confirmation”.
Hod bless him and your family!
I was raised in the Wesleyan tradition, but my biological family was Catholic. I have always been curious and loved learning about Catholic practices. Thank you for sharing this special day.
God bless you always, Whit. You’re a wonderful, young man and will go far in life with your faith and demeanor. What a beautiful accomplishment. ✨🤍💙🤍✨😇🕊🕊🕊🕊 💙 Jane ~ San Diego
Congratulations Whit! I have so enjoyed watching you grow up through your Mom’s blog. You are pretty amazing!❤️
Congratulations! I am not a Catholic but I have come to love Catholics so much for doing so much good in the world and being a beacon of God’s love and instrument of truth. There is so much beauty in the sacraments and it looked like such a special day. Your church is beautiful too. May God bless Whit and your family. Thank you for sharing!
