I’m only two months late in sharing this but our fourth driver in the house clocked in for duty in December!
I share it now because this blog serves as a little memory book of my family’s milestones and I don’t want this one to get lost in the shuffle! I can hardy believe it, but I think this one was more thrilled to be set free with a license than his brother was. He’s a good, cautious driver but it still seems scary when they head off those first few times. He’s LOVED the freedom to be able to head up to the range, the collectible card shops and volunteer projects. I sure do miss driving Mr. Whit!

If anyone is curious, both of my boys took week long drivers ed classes over the summer before they turned 16. John’s was online due to covid, but Whit’s was in a classroom. This program included a mandatory drug and alcohol awareness class. Then, we had a driving instructor that did three 2-3 hour sessions in the weeks before their exams. Their driving instructors gave the road-test portion of their exam. Of course, we also had them drive every time we went somewhere together in the year they had their learner’s permits.
In Georgia you can get the learner’s permit when you’re 15. You have that for a full year before you can get the license. Teen drivers have a curfew, can only drive with immediately family in the car for six months, can have only one passenger under 21 who is not a family member for the next six months, and then can take only three passengers under 21 until they are 18.

Congratulations to Whit! I know he will be a courteous and careful driver, but it is still scary when they go out for the first times alone because there are so many crazy drivers on the road. I like the Georgia laws for teen drivers especially not being able to carry more than 3 passengers under 21 until they are 18. We had too many young people in our area in fatal or bad crashes with a carload of young people. I am not sure if VA has a similar law, but this is something parents need to lobby for if they have younger children that will soon be driving are or under 18.
