When John pledged a fraternity last summer, I knew right away I wanted to cross-stitch his Greek crest. It’s a tradition rooted in my own story. Daddy-O surprised me with a ZTA crest after my initiation way back in 1995. Over the last thirty years, that stitched piece has followed me from the sorority house to apartments, my first home, and now here. I can’t help but smile every time I brush past it in the hallway. It’s a reminder of where I started and the man that’s cheered me on my whole life. (Gosh, I’ve been sentimental here lately… it’s Whit’s Junior year and we move John back next week.)

When Honey and I started dating in 1998, I made his SAE crest as a Valentine’s gift the following year. Just like Daddy-O did for me, I included his name, my initials, and the date. That crest has hung next to mine since we were married in 2002.

So just as soon as John pledged Sigma Chi, I knew I wanted to do for him what I had done for his dad so many years before. I missed him so terribly much last year, and every time I picked up the project I felt connected to him in a way. I mirrored the design details…. the name, date placement, and overall size… to match what Daddy-O did for me. I gave him the finished and framed crest for his birthday, and it now hangs on the gallery wall in his bedroom at home. He loved it and remarked on how happy he was to have his own. I do a “Forever Gift” for each birthday and this was perfect for number nineteen. (I ordered the kit online but it is now showing sold out.)

Each little stitch carries a lot of love, continues a tradition and marks a milestone for my precious son. I hope one day he’ll look at it and feel all of that.

I love your thoughtfulness!!! And DaddyO!
XXXOOO, Marme
I really enjoy reading your blog. I am a Zeta too. I pledged Zeta Tau Alpha at Indiana State University, Gamma Chi Chapter and was initiated in 1970. It brings me many happy memories to think of those times. Where did you find the needleoint crest kits? I would love to do one for me and one for my husband, who is a Kappa Sigma. His fraternity chapter still meets every year for an annual reunion and golf outing. It is so much fun for them. They have held this reunion annually since 1970. The value of friendship only increases with time.
I feel the same way – and ZLAM! I found the kit online but check here: https://stitch4u.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_3
It’s beautiful, Amanda and will be a lifelong treasure of John’s. 🧵🪡 Jane 🌴
I remember spying (y)our crest in a photo many, many years ago while following your blog and realizing that you, too, are a Zeta! I was initiated 1.27.89! Can’t believe it’s Whit’s junior year of high school!
SAME!
