We had the best time at Auburn Family Weekend last weekend! Every time we get the chance to be there, we soak up every moment – and can hardly stand it when it’s time to leave.
As soon as we rolled into town, we beelined for John’s apartment to hug his neck! I had spent Thursday cooking up all of his favorites… crème de menthe brownies, cottage pie, and sourdough… and he was so, so, so happy to be the lucky recipient. (As were his roomies!)
The apartment itself was in pretty good shape. The boys had hung some décor, and it felt happy and well-lived in. Of course, it was a delight to hug Big Money Mo, too! And naturally, I couldn’t resist giving John’s bathroom a quick cleaning, changing his sheets, and throwing his towels and bedding into the wash. What can I say? I get it from Mother. (I woke up out of a dead sleep Friday night realizing I forgot to remind him to move everything to the dryer. A mother’s work is never done…)

Friday Night
After a nice long visit, we headed to our hotel to change and get ready for supper. We had the joy of taking not just John, but five of his high school friends out for Mexican! One is another Auburn student (and one of John’s freshman roommates), while the other four drove over from Athens for the weekend.

Saturday on the Plains
Saturday morning, we were up bright and early for a beautiful day on the Plains. I love campus on a quiet morning just as much as I do on a bustling game day. We spent the morning visiting with many of our friends, along with quite a few of John’s. I just love soaking in all of Auburn’s game day traditions and seeing John experience them with his circle of people.

Last year was actually my first ever SEC football game, and gosh, they just do it right. I’m still in awe of the pomp and circumstance, the avid fans, and the sheer friendliness of everyone who pours into Jordan Hare Stadium. From the eagle soaring over the field to the crowd singing God Bless America to the fireworks and smoke and bands, it’s truly an experience like no other. Add in rolling Toomer’s Corner after a win, and you’ve got a game day that feels as much about community and tradition as it is about football.

The day was super hot, Honey was itching to watch the Georgia Tech game, and John couldn’t get all of his visitors into the stadium. So we collectively decided to leave at halftime and go our separate ways for the afternoon. Honey and I were picked up by B & B and spent the rest of the afternoon at their campground, relaxing and watching Tech play.

As GT wrapped up their win, we headed back to campus to meet up with the kids for a bit, before walking to Hey Day Market for a pizza supper.

Sunday Brunch & Goodbyes
Sunday morning, we slept in a bit before taking John to his favorite brunch spot – Acre. It’s always such a treat to enjoy a delicious meal before the inevitable goodbye.
I don’t know if or when it will ever be easy to say goodbye to our boy, but each visit fills my heart to the brim. Leaving Auburn is always bittersweet. This town has truly become a place we could call home.
As we drove away, I felt overwhelmingly grateful – for this season of life, for the time we get to spend together, and for the knowledge that John is exactly where he’s meant to be.

Until next time, Auburn. WDE!
