September Sips & Suits Mahjong Club

We had our regularly scheduled monthly mahj night this week! After a smaller group in August (back to school week thinned the crowd), we were back to a full group of 12 players in September.

This month, I tried to simplify the setup by using the tables and “open spaces” I already have, rather than moving furniture around to create extra square tables. It was so much easier! With three groups playing, we set up as follows: one table in the dining room, a square folding table in the den, and one on the porch.

I wasn’t sure if the weather would cooperate or if anyone would want to play outside, but it turned out to be the most coveted table of the night! (I did leave the game room table open, just in case they decided to take things indoors.)

Through trial and error, I’ve learned that 12 players is the perfect group size for our monthly meets. Any more than that, and it becomes a major effort to rearrange furniture and create more play space.

To help keep things simple, I updated our Sign Up Genius to cap the group at 12 spots. Two days before each event, I send out a reminder and ask everyone to notify the group right away if they need to cancel so their spot can be opened up for someone else. We use Group Me for easy, ongoing communication, which keeps everyone in the loop.

As always, we nibbled on cheese, fruit, and crackers and popped some bubbly to kick off the evening. I love these nights with a home full of ladies and the clinking of tiles.

  1. I love this and wished I lived closer to join your crew! My pals find it hard to play at night (so many conflicts although we do have some success!). We now are the 7am crew playing weekly, complete with lots of coffee in hand. It’s been so nice (and low pressure on the entertaining scale) with a hard stop so all can continue with their day. My favorite way to start the day, mahj, coffee and laughs with my favorite crew!
