Celebrating Our January Birthday Girls

Last weekend felt like one of those full heart kind of weekends. Marme and Daddy-O were in town for Whit’s cello concert and Jay’s Matilda performance, and we used the opportunity to gather our party of nine to celebrate our beautiful January birthday girls. Only John was missing, and we certainly felt that gap at the table.

CeeCee turned 13. Marme turned 78. Both are incredibly beautiful, inside and out, and I admire so much about each of them. One is just stepping into her teenage years with bright eyes and big dreams, and the other carries nearly eight decades of grace, wisdom and creativity. To watch them together across the table is such a gift.

I kept things simple with a Sunday lunch at home. We picked up all the Chicken Salad Chick family favorites and served them with Hawaiian rolls, mini croissants and crackers so everyone could build their own plate. A big bowl of fruit and dip added a fresh touch.

I made our favorite jalapeño cheddar crackers, which disappeared almost immediately. Marme made deviled eggs, because of course she did, and Byrd’s cookies rounded out the buffet.

Before we cut into dessert, Whit gave Mimi the sweetest gift of all. He played his cello just for her. There is something so tender about music filling a house full of the ones you love the most. It was one of those moments I tucked away in my heart.

For dessert, I made a cookie cake, and it was devoured by all. That seems to be the theme lately.

Family birthdays do not have to be fancy to be meaningful. A simple table, a house full of people you love, a cello played for a grandmother, and three generations gathered together. Grateful does not even begin to cover it.
