Disney Cruise Line {Stem to Stern Wine Tasting}

On our girls trip aboard the Disney Dream in October, I had the complete joy of attending the Stem to Stern Wine Tasting. And let me just say, everything is exponentially more fun with a crowd of girlfriends.

At the time of writing, the class is $50 and lasts about an hour. For that hour, you are guided through six wines, typically three whites and three reds. It feels generous without being overwhelming. On the Dream, it is held in PINK! which is my favorite venue!

The class is led by one of the ship’s sommeliers, usually someone fairly high ranking and clearly very knowledgeable. They walk you through each wine, explaining its origin, history, tasting notes and suggested pairings. You learn how to observe the color, swirl the glass, notice the aroma and taste with intention. Or, if you are like most of us, you listen politely and sip happily.

One of the things I loved most about this tasting is that it feels completely approachable. Whether you know a lot about wine or absolutely nothing, you are welcome. It is not intimidating in the least. The biggest takeaway of the hour was simple and freeing: there is no wrong wine. Drink what you like. Everyone’s palate is different, and you should never feel pressured to order something just because it sounds impressive. (I am famous amongst my friends for loving cheap wine!)

Between tastings, bottled water is provided so you can clear your palate and reset before the next pour. The pace is relaxed, and the whole experience feels more like edutainment than a formal class.

Toward the end, we learned about how Champagne and sparkling wines are made, which may have been the most fascinating part for me. There is something about understanding the process that makes you appreciate what is in your glass just a little more.

And then, the cherry on top.

Each attendee receives an exclusive Disney Cruise Line pin that is only available through the tasting. I had no idea that was part of the experience, and it was such a fun surprise. It has since been added to my special pin collection. So far, this has been the only tasting class where I walked away with a pin, which I consider a win.

Six glasses of wine, an hour of learning, laughter with girlfriends and a souvenir pin to remember it by. It is a lovely way to spend a sea day.

If you enjoy wine even a little bit, I highly recommend it.
