Sips & Suits {April Mahj x2}

It was a great week for mahj!

I spent such a fun evening with my pledge sisters playing. Our host N put together the most delicious Greek salad for us, which I’ve already recreated at home, and we surprised her with a little 50th birthday cheer.

Later in the week, I hosted our Sips & Suits group here. We’ve started rotating snacks, and this one was not only delicious but a total showstopper… goat cheese topped with puréed strawberries, with just a little jalapeño and lime for a kick. So good.

I also played for the first time with my own set of “real” tiles. This is Miss Mahjong, and I’m officially obsessed. I definitely need to get a better picture because it does not do her justice.

Weeks like this are exactly why I started playing in the first place. :-)

  1. Your new tile set is beautiful!
    I’m going to start a monthly mahj group and was hoping you could share some tips/tricks that have worked for your “Sips and Suits”…
    1- Do you have a particular day/time every month or do you vary it to accommodate others?
    2- Do you host in your house every month or rotate?
    3- Do you limit the number of tables and therefore players who can attend? If so, how do you practically manage that?
    4- If someone cancels last minute are they responsible for trying to find a sub?
    HAHA! You’ve inspired us! Maybe this is a future blog post idea?! How to Mahj at home…
    I appreciate any tips/tricks you can share!

    1. Thank you!
      1. I vary it by day of week – Monday – Thursday
      2. I host every time. I tried to get the momentum going to rotate hosting but it never took off. Since I host, people sign up to bring the food and drinks.
      3. I do limit. It is easy for me to have 3 tables, with 12 players. Now that it is nice out, I can add a 4th on my porch for 16 players. I have a sign up genius and it is first come first serve.
      4. Yes, but it rarely works out You can play with 3 at a table, and we often have at least one table with 3.
      Another tip… I keep timing strict. Arrive at 6:30 if you wish to snack / mingle. Play starts promptly at 7. Everyone leaves promptly at 9. Everyone has been really great and respectful of this and it has worked out nicely.
