The Last Note

Well… I knew this day would come, but I truly thought we had at least one more year.

The curtain has officially closed on Whit’s orchestra journey.

For the past six years, he’s proudly played the cello, and it has brought so much joy to all of us. It’s hard to believe it all started during online school in 2020. I can still picture the day he picked up John’s cello, popped a string, and had no idea what he was doing… but wanted to learn so badly. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at once.

Since then, he’s worked so hard, both in and out of school, moving up each year and growing more confident in his playing. Last year, he auditioned for his school’s chamber orchestra and was proud to be part of it. And rightfully so… they are incredibly talented. Truly one of those groups where you just sit back and think, wow.

This wasn’t an easy decision. Whit didn’t necessarily want to stop, but heading into senior year, he reached that point where something had to give. He’s really enjoyed the drafting pathway his school offers, and in order to complete that and earn a few certifications, there simply isn’t enough room in his schedule to continue orchestra as well.

Of course, I offered lessons outside of school… but the reality is, he’s busy. Busy with school, college applications, service work, golf and trying to make space for just being a kid in this season.

We’ll keep the cello here, and I hope he picks it up from time to time. I’ll miss the music, but I’ll always love what it gave him.

  1. Awe. Nice share. Wow. Heavy hearted performance I imagine. So cool of Whit to have had desire to pick up the cello on his own accord as a 6th grader stuck at home.

Yeah, keep the cello for sure 😀

  2. What a handsome young man with an amazing talent! Please tell him not to put down his cello for too long. It’s a skill few people are fortunate enough to possess. Also, playing at weddings would be a great side hustle for him…I was just quoted $400 for an hour and a half of unaccompanied violin, and the cello is equally as lovely!
