America 250 {Patriotic Decor in the Den}

I’m back with another stop on this year’s patriotic home tour as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday.

The star of the room is undoubtedly our Fort McHenry flag. Since we’re not using the fireplace this time of year, I love draping it across the mantel where it softens what would otherwise be a big black opening and creates a meaningful focal point for the room.

This isn’t just any flag. During our family’s trip to Baltimore in 2021, we purchased this very flag and had it flown over Fort McHenry. It remains one of my favorite souvenirs we’ve ever brought home from a vacation. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, it feels especially fitting to display a piece connected to the place that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner. Every time I see it, I’m reminded not only of that wonderful family trip but also of the history and resilience it represents. I can’t quite bring myself to hang it outdoors where weather and time might wear it down, so instead it takes center stage here in the den where we can enjoy it every day while keeping it perfectly preserved.

A deliciously scented patriotic candle found its place on the coffee table, and I tucked a handful of small American flags into a vase of fresh flowers for an easy nod to the season.

On the side tables, I added a few favorite patriotic accents. One holds an acrylic American flag that was a thoughtful gift from a friend several years ago. On the other, Mr. Peanut is filled with Dum Dums, a sweet and whimsical touch that always makes guests – and my own boys – smile.

The Frame TV is displaying the same patriotic artwork I shared in the living room. One of my favorite decorating shortcuts, digital art adds a festive focal point without requiring any storage space once the season ends. After purchasing the artwork, I spent an entire evening creating the watercolor-style “250” and ring of thirteen stars that I layered into the design to commemorate America’s big birthday.

I also swapped out the everyday pillow covers for a softer summer look. White pillows with blue anchors add just the right hint of patriotism without screaming Fourth of July. The pleated flange detail makes them feel a little more polished and elevated. To finish the room, I borrowed a pair of Americana blue throw blankets from Whit’s room. They feature his monogram, but thanks to the interlocking “WW,” they work just as well for the W family as a whole. I love when decorating pieces can pull double duty.

Next up: the kitchen!
