One of my favorite surprises from our Disney Destiny cruise came courtesy of Sister. A few weeks before sailing, she casually mentioned that I should pack my tiles. Naturally, I assumed this meant she had finally decided to learn and join my little obsession.
I was wrong.
Very wrong. HAHA!
As it turns out, she had purchased a Mahjong solitaire board for me as a gift and wanted to make sure I had my tiles onboard.
If you’re unfamiliar with a Mahjong solitaire board, it isn’t the tile-matching game most people think of when they hear the term Mahjong solitaire. This board is actually designed to let you play and practice American Mahjong by yourself. Using your own tiles, you work through mock hands while the board helps track the Charleston, discards and other elements of game play that would normally involve other players.
What I loved most was that it forced me to think through hands and line choices in a way that’s hard to do during a regular game. It felt a bit like doing drills in a sport. Less about winning and more about building skills and confidence. That said, I was apparently still in the practice phase. I could not win for the life of me.
Even so, I found it wonderfully entertaining and ended up spending hours playing during our sea day. Between the ocean views, a Dole Whip smoothie and my little Mahjong board, I was perfectly content while Honey napped beside me.
It was such a fun way to enjoy a quiet afternoon and I can absolutely see myself pulling it out at home when I want a little Mahjong fix between game nights.
If you already own Mahjong tiles and enjoy puzzles, strategy games or simply having a little something to keep your hands busy while relaxing, I highly recommend giving one a try.
Just be warned: it’s surprisingly addictive.
