America 250 {Patriotic Porch}

Today’s stop on my patriotic home tour is the porch, which may just be my favorite place to enjoy all the red, white and blue.

Our neighborhood hosts a spectacular fireworks display every Fourth of July, so we often gather here with friends and family before the show. Because I love stretching the season as long as possible, the patriotic décor comes out in early June and stays all month long.

Since adding the pool, I’ve simplified the porch décor quite a bit, and honestly, I like it even better. A few pillow covers, a table runner and an easy centerpiece are really all this space needs.

Many years ago, Mother helped me sew simple red and white slipcovers for my everyday throw pillows. They slide right over the existing pillows in just a few minutes, take up almost no storage space and instantly give the porch a festive feel. The American flag pillow was a Pottery Barn find from years ago, and it still comes out every summer.

I’ve also been using the same American flag bunting for years. I love that it’s just as pretty from inside the porch as it is from the yard, adding a patriotic welcome from every angle.

The table runner has been part of my collection for ages as well. It was another old Pottery Barn purchase, and every time I pull it out, I think about one of my favorite family traditions. My nephew Jay was born on May 29 but wasn’t due until the Fourth of July, so we took his newborn photos on this very runner. We recreated that picture for years, and now the runner feels every bit as sentimental as it does seasonal.

For the centerpiece, I kept things wonderfully simple. I filled four mason jars with hydrangeas from my yard, tucked in a pair of American flags and nestled everything inside my vintage Coca-Cola crate. It took just a couple of minutes to put together and feels perfectly at home on the porch.

I’ll finish up the tour tomorrow!
