It’s time for another installment of Needlepoint Notes! Back in April, I shared my very first stitches and admitted that I had fallen headfirst into this wonderful new hobby. A few months later, I’m happy to report that I’m still completely hooked.
I’ve finished two canvases and have a third well underway, and every project teaches me something new.
The first finish was my WiFi password canvas. I actually brought this one with me to Arizona and stitched away during quiet moments throughout the trip. If you read my first post, you may remember that I wasn’t convinced I loved the stitches I’d chosen. I debated ripping the whole thing out more times than I can count. Eventually, I reminded myself that no one was grading this project. The whole point was to enjoy the process. So I kept stitching.
I also swapped the original colors to better coordinate with our guest suite, and I absolutely love how it turned out. My original plan was to frame it and use my Cricut to add our WiFi password in removable vinyl on the outside of the glass. Have I actually done that yet? Of course not.
But I still think it’s a fun, practical piece that will eventually find its home in the guest room. One of my goals with needlepoint has been to choose projects that are useful or meaningful rather than simply filling the house with decorative objects.

My second finish may be my favorite yet.
My talented bestie painted a simple black bow canvas as a keepsake for my fiftieth birthday, and I absolutely adore it. I spent quite a bit of time flipping through my stitch book, looking for combinations that would give the bow some dimension, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The ribbon has a wonderfully full, slightly puffy look that makes it feel almost three-dimensional. I’m signed up for a finishing class this fall where I’ll learn how to turn stitched canvases into ornaments, and I can’t wait to add this one to our tree for years to come.

My current project is for John. I’ve made great progress and even added his initials freehand, which felt like a big leap of faith for a beginner! Thankfully, they turned out just as I’d hoped. This canvas will eventually be framed for his room, and I love the thought of creating something handmade for him to enjoy long after he’s left home.

One thing I’ve learned over these first few months is that needlepoint isn’t really about finishing canvases. It’s about slowing down and creating something with your hands in a world where so much is digital.
I’m already planning my next canvas… because apparently this hobby is every bit as addictive as everyone warned me it would be.
I’m also wishing Sister the happiest birthday today! Enjoy your time in the city!!!!!!!
