NYC Travel Diaries {W New York Union Square}

Choosing the right hotel in New York City can feel overwhelming. There are hundreds of options, each with its own personality, neighborhood and price point. For this trip, our priority was simple. We wanted to be close to Sister and her family. The W Union Square ended up being the perfect home base. We liked it so much that I’d happily stay here again.

The hotel recently completed a beautiful renovation, and everything feels fresh while still embracing the signature W style. The décor is definitely moodier than your typical luxury hotel with rich colors, dramatic lighting and modern furnishings, yet it fits. It was sophisticated without taking itself too seriously.

One of my favorite surprises was our room. New York hotel rooms aren’t exactly known for being spacious, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much room we had to spread out. There was plenty of space for luggage, comfortable seating and room to move around without constantly bumping into one another. Even better? It was quiet. I’m an incredibly light sleeper, and city hotels can sometimes be challenging with street noise, sirens and late-night activity. That’s not to say it was silent, but I had no trouble sleeping!

The service throughout our stay was great. Every single team member we encountered was warm, welcoming and genuinely helpful. Those little interactions really do make a difference, and the staff consistently made us feel well cared for. We also enjoyed nightly turndown service, one of those thoughtful touches that always makes a hotel feel just a bit more luxurious.

One of the things I appreciated most was the location. Union Square has such a fun energy. Every morning, the Union Square Greenmarket filled the park with local farmers, flowers, baked goods and specialty foods. We found ourselves wandering through more than once, coffee in hand, simply enjoying the atmosphere before heading off for the day’s adventures. The neighborhood is also filled with wonderful restaurants, cafés and shops, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring without ever needing transportation. And when we did want to venture farther it couldn’t have been easier. The nearby express subway station made getting around Manhattan incredibly simple. Within minutes we could be heading uptown for museums, downtown for dinner or across town for a Broadway show. Even if you’re new to New York, this location makes navigating the city feel much less intimidating.

The hotel itself has several wonderful gathering spaces.

The Living Room quickly became one of our favorite places to relax. We enjoyed happy hour there on our first afternoon, easing into vacation mode before meeting up with family. It has a lively, social atmosphere that feels distinctly New York.

Each morning, we grabbed coffee from the lobby café before beginning our day, another convenience we appreciated.

Breakfast was served at Seahorse, the hotel’s beautiful restaurant. The space transforms throughout the day, feeling bright and welcoming in the morning before taking on a completely different energy each evening as it fills with diners and cocktails. Guests who reserve through me receive daily breakfast for two here, making it an especially wonderful way to begin each day in the city.

Although we didn’t make it upstairs this trip, the rooftop bar is another fantastic amenity for guests looking to enjoy skyline views and a cocktail after a day of sightseeing.

What I appreciated most about the W Union Square was that it felt like more than just a place to sleep. It became part of our New York experience. Whether we were grabbing coffee before setting out, meeting family for drinks, returning after a full day of exploring or simply relaxing in our spacious room, the hotel always felt welcoming and comfortable.
