The Fourth at Home

After our big night out celebrating on the Third, we spent the Fourth exactly where we wanted to be… home. There was no agenda, no rushing from place to place and nowhere we needed to be. Honey and Whit tackled the yard while I made a big breakfast, and before long we had settled into one of those slow summer days that always seem to pass too quickly. We floated in the pool, read our books, napped with the puppies and simply enjoyed being together.

As evening approached, Whit invited a whole crew of friends over, and the house filled with teenagers once again. Hosting the boys’ friends is one of my greatest joys. They are thoughtful, kind and genuinely enjoy being together.

Honey fired up the griddle for smash burgers while I made shaved ice and brought out Whit’s favorite cookie cake, decorated as an American flag for the occasion.

The rest of the evening unfolded exactly as summer should. The kids swam, played ping pong, watched soccer, doused each other with water guns, and jumped back in the pool a hundred million times. Country music played in the background while the American flags fluttered in the evening breeze. As golden hour settled in, we turned the pool lights to red, white and blue, climbed onto our floats and watched fireworks from around the neighborhood sparkle across the sky.

I don’t know that there’s a sweeter sound than kids laughing. Not because of elaborate plans or expensive entertainment, but because they’re simply enjoying one another’s company. It reminded me that the very best celebrations are often the simplest ones. A backyard. Good food. Family. Friends. A summer evening. And the freedom to enjoy all of it.

I truly can’t imagine a more fitting way to celebrate our country’s birthday.
